Inside Trump’s Palm Beach castle and his 30-year fight to win over the locals
Washington Post ^

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The patriarchs of this quiet island of millionaires threw up roadblocks when Donald Trump swooped in and turned its historic oceanfront Mar-a-Lago mansion into a private club.

The town council, seeing Trump as an ostentatious outsider, handed him a list of restrictions as he sought to transform the property in the 1990s. Membership, traffic, party attendance, even photography — all would be strictly limited.

But Trump undercut his adversaries with a searing attack, claiming that local officials seemed to accept the established private clubs in town that had excluded Jews and blacks while imposing tough rules on his inclusive one.

Trump’s lawyer sent every member of the town council copies of two classic movies about discrimination: “A Gentleman’s Agreement,” about a journalist who pretends to be Jewish to expose anti-Semitism, and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” about a white couple’s reaction to their daughter bringing home a black fiance.

The move infuriated council members, who said it was a distraction from their concerns that Trump’s club would spoil a quiet street. But, in time, Trump got most of the restrictions lifted.

Trump has filed three lawsuits over perhaps his biggest irritation: the planes that fly over Mar-a-Lago, which sits just a couple miles from the West Palm Beach airport's main runway

Trump had for years done battle with this jerk in Palm Beach County government. When this jerk got put in charge of PBI, he immediately changed the rules so planes had to go right over Trump's place on descent.

Trump diplomatically told Perry he would not make an endorsement in the GOP primary race until he knows whether former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin plans to run.

Nope and you’ll never hear any of his kids or relatives doing anything even remotely similar to the Kennedys. No rape, no drugs, no drinking, no murder yet the MSM never bashes the Holy Royal Kennedys as much as they bash Trump. Not even killer Ted Kennedy has been bashed by the press as much as they bash Trump.

I remember him talking about this in one of his books, “The Three Generations” Grandfather, Father and Son...

He said he was not liked by the locals at all, and every time he would want to do something with the property at Mar, they would throw road blocks up against him...

I was unaware that Cruz was ever there, but the pictures of his home in Mar are breath taking...

I have always thought something was between them, if not V.P. perhaps A.G. which Cruz would be great at, more so than V.P. and I would think if there ever opened up a slot in the Supremes Trump would nominate him for that position, since Cruz has argued and won before them....

‘He’s the billionaire who never talks down to workers, who is REVILED by rich people and is somehow viewed as The Little Guy by poor people.

And it’s ALL TRUE.’

I think Trump’s common touch comes from playing baseball, he was a shortstop who was chased by a couple of pro teams. He told them he was going into business so he could make real money. I read that somewhere, hope it is true.

Anyone who has ever played sports knows that your value is based on what you can do not on how much money your dad has.

There are going to be a whole bunch of disappointed "Trump/Cruz" dreamers if Trump wins.

There is no way Trump would take Cruz as VP.

If Trump was going have any Cruz as VP he should get Heidi. She has more accomplishments and experience in politics/foreign policy, finance and business than Ted...Ted's a dud.

Was just talking about that with hubby. We both agree that Cruz would make a WONDERFUL AG and could go on to be a great SCOTUS.

Sorry Sam Adams 76 I missed the end of you post.

So perhaps Trump agreed to run for president to keep the heat off Cruz. And in the case Trump actually happened to win the nomination and election, he would have a spot for Cruz in his administration (if not VP). And likewise should Cruz be the winner."

This is exactly what some of us have thought for a long time.

When you add in the part about Palin it makes even more sense.

Unlike their Queen Clinton who is never at her home long enough for anyone to complain about it. She’s lived on the taxpayer’s dollar for her entire life. The Washington Fishwrap needs to do a piece on their Queen in Waiting.

Is Bruce Pelly the guy you’re talking about? In the article he comes across as a real jackass. I hope Trump beats him good.

Probably is... it’s not something I follow, I’ve just heard all these things around town (I live in Palm Beach County).

And Lt. Col. Allen West for Military, would make a great Sec of Defense.

Our Military has to be repaired, the ‘confused gender’s eliminated, and the downsizing stopped. We are at pre WW2 strength. Base security is very lax or none existent.
We are retired Military and use our Naval base at least once a week, security stinks. Guards have only side arms, and half the time they are Rent a Guards.

Trump loves to screw with local jerk governments. He sues them into submission!
It will be fun watching him dismantle Washington.

What’s the matter with Cruz’s jacket in that photo? It looks like he borrowed someone else’s jacket ... the sleeves are way too long for him.
