Donald Trump says tough gun control laws in Paris contributed to tragedy

BEAUMONT, Tex. -- Donald Trump says the tough gun control laws in Paris contributed to the high death toll during a series of terrorist attacks on Friday. The attacks, he added, also reveal the danger in allowing Syrian refugees into the country.

"You can say what you want, but if they had guns -- if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry -- it would have been a much, much different situation," Trump said to cheers during a political rally at an arena in southeast Texas on Saturday afternoon. "I hear it all the time, you know. You look at certain cities that have the highest violence, the highest problem with guns and shootings and killings -- Chicago is an example, toughest gun laws in the United States, nothing but problems. So our country better get smart because we're not smart right now."

By making that comment, Trump doubled down on a message he tweeted in January, following a smaller-scale terrorist attack: "Isn't it interesting that the tragedy in Paris took place in one of the toughest gun control countries in the world?" As that dated tweet recirculated on Friday evening, the French ambassador to the United States, Gerard Araud, tweeted at Trump: "This message is repugnant in its lack of any human decency. Vulture."

Wait - you mean this Donald Trump?
It's often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. After a tragedy like the massacre at Columbine High School, anyone could feel that it is too easy for Americans to get their hands on weapons. But nobody has a good solution. This is another issue where you see the extremes of the two existing major parties. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions. I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today's Internet technology we should be able to tell within seventy-two hours if a potential gun owner has a record.
Or is it the new and improved "Republican" candidate Trump?

Not understanding political Islam is what caused the killing!

Now I understand why globalists/leftists are tolerant of Islam, because it is a political movement as well that controls people.

Actually, although the French don’t have the constitutional protections we have, and their laws are somewhat more restrictive, compared to most nations, the French have one of the higher rates of gun ownership. There are about 30 firearms per 100 capita.

IIRC, Canada is similar but it is multi tiered permitting, most are shotguns or rifles for hunting. The number of permits issued to actually carry a handgun are very few.

So were going back 15 years and pulling up vague statements as ammunition now, ok I’ll play. Let’s go back to earlier this year when Cruz voted for TPA against the advice of Sen Sessions. Even going so far as to say Sessions was wrong on TPA/TPP and taking out a full page add in the nyt promoting TPA. Or back a couple years when Cruz said he wanted to increase H1B visas 500%. Or legalizing aliens here illegally is not amnesty. Or maybe his vote for the corker bill.

You fail to state that in the Trump quote you posted that Donald went on to state that he did not think an AR-15 was an assault weapon.

He was talking about fully auto-fire weapons. Yes Donald Trump used the wrong term but you are purposely misstating his position.

You also fail to acknowledge that people can change their mind on issues.

I didn’t object to what trump said about concealed carry. My understanding is there is little legal concealed carry in France.

But trump said they have one of the toughest gun control laws in the world. But measured by actual firearm ownership, they do not.
