The science that is lacking in MHO is such an impact on solar panels that always face up.
If such a condition occurs as in 1859 we know it will impact the 2015 grid. Will this same energy coming from the sun, destroy or critically damage the photovoltaic panels that receive the energy ?
I suspect with today’s technology monitoring, we will have a few days notice of coming event. Is it enough to off circuit breakers, or disconnect wires, or will the panel’s junctions and diodes get ‘wasted’ anyway?
No panel manufacturer wants to talk about this — I wonder why?
Bush’s fault?
Global warming?
Martial Law?
Will affect women and minorities more severely.
Maybe Algore and his fools can get tanning booths and sun screen banned. That should stop these solar storms.
At least they are talking mitigation strategies. Ask a lefty what the mitigation strategy is if they overshoot on the global warming cure and go into an ice age. They look at you then say the following words; “You’re a racist.”
0bama will just sign an EO preventing the sun from doing it and then go golfing.
Space, Astronomy and CATASTROPHISM Pinggg!..............
As far as the panels go? Probably not. It depends on the panel. If it has sensitive electrical components within the panel, then maybe. If it simply gathers the light and sends the electricity down the line to the components that control it, probably not. The circuitry that connects them? Possibly.
What I've read is that solar storms are low voltage and that the reason the Carrington even affected rail lines and telegraph lines was that they absorbed the low voltage over a great distance, thus creating loads of very high voltage.
Your solar panel won't absorb that much voltage, and line protections preventing power surges should prevent damage from the grid.
0bama needs to write an Executive Order prohibiting solar storms.
I keep reading that we are headed into a long solar minimum, possible ice age stuff, so maybe that is a good thing. Rather than have to do anything, the government can resume its duties as chief fear monger.
And yet the White House is more concerned about what’s happening on the sun than what’s happening on American soil.
What exactly are major components that would be impacted by an EMP, that the utility companies don’t have in stock and are only available from foreign sources?
Transformers?
Switch stations?
Insulators?
All of the above on your list....but the transformers are at most risk since the big ones are 1) Made when required and not ahead of time...and 2) They are made in China.
Here's the deal...I was in a meeting in 2010 (military planning and discussion) where we had the White House science adviser (WHSA) come speak to us. She was rather blunt as too how ignorant the president was regarding solar weather and its impacts. She basically said he was an idiot...but in that washingtonian double speak way
She told us that what was really holding us back in regards to dealing with a Carrington-type event was the power companies. They understood the dangers and the risks to the grid...and also understood the ramifications for doing nothing...but they did not want to expend the $ to fix it. They wanted the government to fork over the cash so they could make the necessary preps for a "just in case" scenario.
Most people have NO CLUE as to what would happen if we had a Carrington-like event...or one that was greater. The general in charge of the conference (who's job it was at the time to brain-storm worse case scenarios) said...and this is a quote: "An event like this is the only thing I've looked at that keeps me up at night."
That got my attention. When the WHSA said most people don't have a clue, I spoke up and said I did. She kinda looked at me with a condescending glare...then I said "I've read One Second After by Forstchen". She smiled and said "then you do understand it..."
Bottom line: I know for a fact Obama was briefed on this in Feb of 2010 (this isn't speculation...its a fact). The question I have is "why now?" Why is he choosing to do something now rather than addressing it 5 years ago?
Makes me wonder what he's up to since I don't trust him.
Ha!
Bambi wants to be able to say he’s addressing the problem, while in fact impeding the implementation.
I’d like to get in business of commoditizing these transformers.
Manufacture and warehouse them around the country, then allow utilities and municipalities to bid on them, perhaps “renting the right”.
