A British plane narrowly avoided a rocket attack while flying over the Sinai Peninsula in August.

The Thomson Airways jet was approaching the airport in Sharm al-Sheikh and carrying 189 passengers, most of whom were British tourists on vacation. The pilot deftly managed to divert the plane and the rocket missed by only 300 meters. ...

unguided rocket, miss by 300 meters = low aircraft, probably on final landing approach or had just taken off.

Kinda dubious that a pilot could jink a huge commercial transport WITHOUT THE PASSENGERS KNOWING....

Same group as the Russia tragedy at 31,000 feet..?

Possibly, but did they use the same WEAPON..?

NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.

Khat-chewing muzzie dummies pulled it off twice in one day with *unguided rockets*, but at 31,000 feet..?

That’s like throwing a rock at the moon and scoring a hit, even with a man-portable MANPADS.

Would have to have something like an SA-6, which the Khaddafi did have in his arsenal, but how would you sneak it from Libya into Egypt...???

>_<

Really looks like a bomb.

And that such a thing is even on their mental radar. Yeah, BS for sure.

Yeah, commercial pilots were nearly never in the military. And the charts in the part of the world don’t list minimum altitudes in some areas.
And almost nobody is aware that there is any strife down there.

And ISIS tech support keeps the missiles we gave the rebels in top shape, no chance of a poorly maintained unit not tracking correctly.

It is actually very plausible.

Look at their border, not hard. Not saying it wasn’t a bomb though.

If the US satellite data of heat signature near the plane, no missile trail, it could have been a bomb.

Looks like only the Egyptians want it not to be a bomb and it looks like Russia has come around to that initial conclusion.

Looks like Israel’s EL AL airlines with it’s ECM pods for passenger planes is going to be making some major sales soon...

We really do need to invoke the Prime Directive and completely isolate these savages until they come up with some semblance of civilization.

A few thoughts: first, if the pilot was able to “dodge” the “rocket” by maneuvering, he had visual on the weapon, indicating it was a front-quarter attack. Many of the shoulder-fired SAMs stolen from Libyan armories (and other locations) are older Russian SA-7/14s (or their Chinese-made clones) and cannot engage front-aspect targets. From that angle, the seeker could not gain/maintain lock, so it would fly ballistically, rather than guide on the target. May explain how the jet managed to dodge the weapon—and why it didn’t strike the airliner.

Secondly, no mention of the jet’s location or altitude at the time of the attack. There are peaks as high as 7,000 feet on the Sinai, and firing a MANPAD from an elevated position can extend the envelope. However, the INN account suggests that the aircraft was at a much lower altitude, perhaps on final when the attack occurred. If that’s accurate, it’s an indicator that ISIS is operating literally outside the wire of the airport, and it may be just a matter of time before the terrorists get lucky with a MANPAD, or smuggle another bomber on board.

A missile will look similar to a very fast moving aircraft with a contrail entering your path of travel. I only fly small planes but that would definitely get my attention.

Airliners are actually capable of some scary maneuvers. It could all have happened in less than 1 second and passengers just assumed it was a spot of strong turbulence.

This took place in August. Here’s the takeaway from a piece in the Guardian: “The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that the incident took place but said it did not believe the missile was an attempt to target the British plane, instead ascribing the missile seen by the Thomson pilots to Egyptian military manoeuvres.”
