A British plane carrying 189 passengers came within 1,000ft of a rocket as it approached Sharm El Sheikh, it emerged last night.
The Thomson flight from London Stansted only took evasive action after the pilot spotted the missile speeding through the air.
The jet landed safely, and holidaymakers were not told they had been seconds from disaster.
The Department for Transport confirmed the incident took place on August 23 - just two months before a Metrojet plane crashed in central Sinai, killing all 224 on board.
A source said: âThe first officer was in charge at the time but the pilot was in the cockpit and saw the rocket coming towards the plane.
"He ordered that the flight turn to the left to avoid the rocket, which was about 1,000ft away."
They said the five members of cabin crew only found out about the incident after landing.
The âshakenâ staff were offered the chance to stay the night in Egypt, but chose to head straight back to the UK on a flight that took off with no internal or external lights

Shooting either an RPG or a MANPADS from a Cessna would almost certainly result in the death of anyone on that a/c and likely would bring down the a/c, too.
Even the comparitively modest ejector can blast is actually pretty strong.
If you shoot an RPG-7 and I’m standing 2 or 3 meters behind, I DIE *FOR SURE*.
Hillary’s Benghazi MANPADS...now you know “what difference does it make”...
“A Manpad cannot reach 30,000 feet”
I wonder if it could have been hit at a lower altitude and the thing didn’t go off until later?
We and the Russians both obtained examples of each other’s missiles through duds stuck in parts of airplanes that made it back to base.
Which explains the erratic behavior of the one shot down.
What a hellhole place that appears to be.
.
The Russian RPG’s have been used to take down helicopters. I would not be surprised if a rag fired an RPG-29 at an approaching aircraft. They have a range up to 2600 feet.
They are/were in the inventory of Libya, Syria, Hamas, and Pakistan.
Hitting an aircraft at speed would be just Sierra Hotel Lima.
Concur.
My guess in this incident:
Some raghead with an RPG squeezed one off at an approaching a/c or one that had just taken off, and immediately took off, driving like a bat out of hell.
Unsophisticated, failed attack using pretty primitive weapons.
And my blind guess is the pilot saw it AFTER it missed, and all this “I jinked my immense commercial aircraft, low to the ground, on the SLY..” is sorta laying it on a little thick.
IF THESE MUZZIES CAN design and build hell cannons, tunnel bombs, Ipod-targeted mortars, smart machineguns, IED`s and suicide HUMVEE`s n trucks, nothing can stop them from modified Cessna air platform rocket launchers. They are vey smart people. Never underestimate your enemy. That was exactly the mistake of our govt made after the sheikh bombed us in NY City.
I wonder what front page news stories ran on August 24... probably something about Caitlyn Jenner.
“I find it incredible that a passenger jet could evade an air to ground missile on approach, especially given that the “passengers were never told”. That would have been one head snapping maneuver.”
I can see you never landed at crumbling Chicago O’Hare field with two rookies on the sticks. It’s equivalent to landing a KC-130 at Chu Lai airbase in ‘68 while under VC rocket fire.
Just having fun with you. :)
“A Manpad cannot reach 30,000 feet”
True, but in this instance, the plane was on approach, so I doubt it was very high.
Somehow, we need to cordon off the Middle East from the rest of us. I feel sorry for Israel but I doubt they’re interested in moving.
Actually Sharrm El Sheikh is very much like Cabo San Lucas with lots of desert and a very nice ocean front hotel community.
Here’s the hotel I stayed at back in 99

No chance. Nobody has MANPADs that reach that high. It was a bomb planted on board. Blew its tail off.
I’d bet the farm and throw in the stock and the tractors on that bet.
I’ve been waiting for it to finally come out. Best kept secret in the world besides bungo being gay, his birth certificate and so forth is that the Benghazi thing was gun running of the 20,000 MANPADS that Daffy Quidaffi had.
Hmm. Interesting question.
What would glassmaker do to those funky pyramidal Egyptian grain silos? Erase them? Or glaze them? Anybody got yield calculations?
LOL!
Yea but they don’t really care about dying. I don’t think anything is a no go for them. So a couple of them die and they lose a plane they stole. Not to be flippant here but...
So?
cynwoody is got a better than even chance of being right, Bomb is the most likely. But Everything else aside, Momar’s weapons dispersed rather quickly and when Ronnie sent the SR’s over way back, they got launched on a LOT.
There is also the real possibility that Sadamm shipped some SAMs over on the chem trucks. The bottom line is that it’s madness to think a nujob outfit with ease of access to a lot of serious firepower is not at some point foing to use it.
McCain and the GOP are up to their necks in this and Barry is doing some weird crap even for him while TOTAL silence comes from Mitch, Jonbon and now Ryan.
They are ALL hiding something pretty determinedly from the world and MANPADS from Lybia is a very likely answer.
Or larger airliner capable stuff. Or both. Momar had it. It vanished. It didn’t go to Israel to help boost BIBI’s forces.
Supposed List of 33rd Degree Masons.
Two missing: Abe and Jack.
One present: John Wilkes Booth.
Also, Alexander Kerensky and Vladimir Lenin (of recent debate fame).
Then there is Senator Simpson (so famous he doesn't need a first name).
One spooky outfit, these Masons!
No heat seeker head or radar guidance?
How does an anti aircraft missile miss a lumbering jetliner?
