Gov. Terry McAuliffeâs prospects of retaking control of the Virginia Senate dimmed Tuesday night as Republicans won a Richmond district that Democrats called key to their plan for flipping the upper chamber.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Glen Sturtevant, a Richmond school board member, defeated Democrat Dan Gecker, a Chesterfield County supervisor in the race to replace Sen. John C. Watkins (Powhatan), who is retiring.
âWell itâs a shame. We did the best we could,â Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) said.
Tuesdayâs election results will ultimately determine McAuliffe (D) has any legislative leverage or political momentum heading into 2016...

"RICHMOND, Va.- Republican Glen Sturtevant has defeated Democrat Dan Gecker in the pivotal 10th District Virginia Senate Race. While the Virginia State Board of Elections website lists Gecker in the lead, votes from Powhatan County have not yet been submitted to the board..."
Anything that’s bad for Clinton’s Bag Man is good for Virginians.
Good news!
There is still one close race in NOVA that is a dem seat, but Edwards-D looks to have won his race against Dye in Southwest Virginia. Anti-gun millions from Bloomberg was the only thing that saved the Dems from a larger defeat. Right now, it is still 21-19 R with an outside chance of 22-18. Big lose for the Carpetbagger.
Good news indeed. This race is a lot more important than most state house races. It both ends hopes of having a rat majority in the VA Senate the next term and the race was watched closely in the Old Dominion as a bell weather for next year.
Good news for Virginia!

YES! There is a God! I hope this trend continues! Looks like the American people are revolting at the ballot box! In spite of all the dead dems!
Gillespie is running for governor. I don’t know if he’s electable
Great! Mark Levin was following this before he went off the air tonight.
Republicans held onto their majority in the Virginia Senate Tuesday, prevailing in a bruising, multi million-dollar off-year election battle with Democrats. Richmond School Board member Glen H. Sturtevant defeated Chesterfield County Supervisor Daniel A. Gecker to claim the 10th District seat of retiring Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan. With Republicans easily maintaining their 2-1 edge in the House of Delegates, the Sturtevant victory effectively preserves GOP control of both chambers in the General Assembly.
It also thwarts a spare-no-expense effort by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, to gain traction for his legislative agenda as he enters the final two years of his four-year term. "This is a big important victory for the state GOP," said professor Larry J. Sabato, head of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "By holding the Senate they have contained the McAuliffe governorship for its duration. Gov. McAuliffe threw everything he had into this but came up short."
Great news!!! Fast Terry the Bagman will remain the ineffectual paperweight to which he’s been relegated from Day One. Glad to see conservatives in the Old Dominion held the line.
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
T-Mac is a carpetbagging, Clinton crony, ‘RatB of the worst sort. SO glad ‘he’ lost ..... bye bye to his plans for Medicaid expansion & other pet Dem/Lib/Prog ruin-the-state projects. Bloomie’s big anti-gun money got flushed down the toilet bowl.
Gillespie probably will do OK in his run for governor, though he’s not my first choice.
Our next test is in two weeks. Louisiana Governorship. Right now Vetter is doing horrible in the polls. Will Louisiana give him a win even with all his weird sex junk? The election is in two weeks and will be one to watch.
Looks like the American people are revolting at the ballot box! In spite of all the dead dems!
MSNBC just had a panel that was discussing the recent (last two election cycles) losses by Dems in Congress, State Governors and down ticket....historic (their words). They said the Dems have no answers...
Yes a very good night in Virginia. The lame duck, remains so !
Yeah! Richard L. (DICK) Saslaw can suck it.
