Republicans retain control of Virginia Senate in blow to McAuliffe

Republicans held onto their majority in the Virginia Senate Tuesday, prevailing in a bruising, multi million-dollar off-year election battle with Democrats. Richmond School Board member Glen H. Sturtevant defeated Chesterfield County Supervisor Daniel A. Gecker to claim the 10th District seat of retiring Sen. John Watkins, R-Powhatan. With Republicans easily maintaining their 2-1 edge in the House of Delegates, the Sturtevant victory effectively preserves GOP control of both chambers in the General Assembly.

It also thwarts a spare-no-expense effort by Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, to gain traction for his legislative agenda as he enters the final two years of his four-year term. "This is a big important victory for the state GOP," said professor Larry J. Sabato, head of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "By holding the Senate they have contained the McAuliffe governorship for its duration. Gov. McAuliffe threw everything he had into this but came up short."
