Smart guns finally poised to change U.S. gun market? (Uh, no thanks)

Whether gun rights advocates like it or not, smart guns are the future says Silicon Valley investor Ron Conway

"Smart guns" that only their owners can fire are not new. And yet, these guns are not mass-produced or sold in the United States, in part because of fears they are a backdoor to greater gun control. But that's going to change says one of Silicon Valley's most prominent entrepreneurs who champions the hi-tech firearms. Lesley Stahl reports on smart guns, firearms advocates believe can lower the number of accidental shootings and suicides in the U.S., on the next edition of 60 Minutes, Sunday, November 1 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Smart weapons recognize their owners' fingerprints or hand grip, or unlock when they wirelessly interact with a special watch or ring worn by the shooter. Ron Conway, an early investor in Google and Facebook who has funded 15 smart-gun projects, says he's looking for the Mark Zuckerberg of guns. He thinks the market is ripe for disruption. "This is going to happen outside the gun industry. Why they aren't doing research and investing in this baffles me," says Conway.

So why can't you buy a smart gun in the United States today? One reason is gun-shop owners won't sell them. When one Maryland dealer announced he would try to sell one smart gun he was immediately attacked with email and phone call threats by people who believed that he could have triggered a New Jersey ban on regular handguns that don't possess smart-gun technology.

This thing is more like a household appliance in its durability and service life.

And an electronic timer circuit can be included which expires the ability to use the gun, if the registered subject hasn't paid the periodic permission fee.

Also included will be a GPS chip so Big Brother can always find the piece when they deem you no longer allowed to keep and bear arms.

Remington mad an electrical fired hunting rifle maybe twenty years ago. Not a “smart gun”, it went over like a lead balloon. Last thing in the world you want is a dead battery when you are facing a Rhino charge.
As some professional big game hunter said years ago, “ The most frightening sound in the world is when you are facing Big Game, and your rifle goes ‘Click’ instead of ‘BOOM’.”

Just wait until non-gun owners like Zuckerberg tell all gun owners what they *should* like.

It’s like the future man!

Lesley Stahl reports on smart guns...

Man, that is unbelievable!

No, not the damn "smart" gun crap...the fact that that old bat, Lesley Stahl is still sucking oxygen.

She's what...95, 96 years old?

I have an iPhone with fingerprint reader. Have to use it every time I want to turn it on. Half the time I have to try 2-4 times for it to work. And that’s a quality product backed by practically unlimited development budget with reason to make it work right every time - and it doesn’t.

Smart weapons recognize their owners' fingerprints or hand grip, or unlock when they wirelessly interact with a special watch or ring worn by the shooter.

Which means the crooks will now steal your guns, watches, rings, and whatever else to make the "smart gun" work while in their possession, thereby defeating the entire purpose of the "smart gun" in the first place.

I can't be the only one who figured that out in 30ns.

I tried the Apple device on an iPad at the store. After training with over 20 different scans it worked very well. Have had terrible experience with the embedded devices on Dell laptops.
