Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) won the first round of votes for the job of House Speaker, but 45 Republican legislators voted against him.
Those 45 members are enough to block him from getting the Speakership during the partisan floor vote on Thursday if the 45 GOP legislators maintain their opposition, and if Ryan is not aided by a last-minute bloc of Democratic votes.
During the closed-door conference, Ryan won just 200 votes for the nomination. Former Florida House Speaker Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL) earned a whopping 43 votes. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)who isnt officially running for Speakerreceived one vote. House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who dropped out of the Speakership race a couple weeks ago, got one vote as well.
The failure on Ryans part to win 218 votesthe threshold for anyone to win the Speakership on the House floor assuming every member of the House is present and voting for a personis a major embarrassment on his part.
The question now becomes whether Ryan will be able to get at 18 of the 45 Republican votes he lost to get behind him on the floor on Thursday. If he cant succeed by the first ballot, the election could go to a second ballot on the floorwhich would likely lead to Ryan’s demise.

Ryano plays a "conservative" sometimes in public and he did not even stay at Holiday Inn Express last night. Maybe Kevin McCarthy would let him borrow Renee Elmers for a few nights.
If the vote for Ryano in the House floor includes a nearly unanimous "Republican" vote, then that formalizes that we have NO POLITICAL PARTY. We may as well be governed by the Chicago Demonratic Machine. At least they are honest public leftists by comparison while the GOP Congressional "leaders" are wall-to-wall whores and even more corrupt.
They just don't get it and apparently neither do you.
It is believed that more than half the GOPers who did not vote for Ryan on the nomination, are not among the 40+ most conservative members and are likely to vote for Ryan when the nomination is put before the House.
Jeez, I was trying to make a joke.
You guys need some snickers bars.
“Please give us a link...”
Here you go. Knock yourself out...

Yeah. My was was not very accurate. My apologies.
I realized it one I posted.
Or possibly someone better like Marsha Blackburn. There’s no way even the “moderate” Republicans vote for Pelosi or Hoyer.
I wondered when somebody would break out that tune.....
Dear WSJ Editors:
Obama’s full budget was passed by all House Democrats, supported by just enough of the Republican “Leadership” including Ryan and Boehner, with the approval of Paul Gigot’s Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, and in spite of the opposition of the vast majority of the Republican caucus and every conservative of note.
Nobody has credibly claimed that conservatism won anything, so this is not compromise. Republican “Leadership” did not complain that they were forced, so this is not even capitulation.
The masks are off at the Halloween Ball, and approving all of Obama’s budget demonstrates that Obama, Boehner, Ryan and Gigot are all leaders of the pro-government liberal Uniparty.
Watching the live vote right now.
No question.
and Ryan will be speaker by weeks end at the latest/
Well. Now PAul Ryan is speaker.
Knock yourself out? You sound like one of the snarky ‘moderators’ last night.
you overlook the salient points
he was elected
he was the only viable candidate
I was asked for a link to PROVE that wunderkind Trey Gowdy took on the 'honor' to actually NOMINATE the illustrious PAUL RYAN for Speaker.
... and to anyone so disposed to be surprised about something like that, well..... KNOCK YOURSELF OUT!
1. Paul Ryan went to Washington as a principled conservative young man (I suspect).
2. Over the years, he has sold his soul on the installment plan for a mess of pottage.
3. Ryan became Willard's running mate in 2012 which, had they (God forbid!) been elected and as "Republicans" no less, would have placed on Ryan's shoulders the burden of electing a gun grabbing, baby-killing, perversion supporting, anti-military, socialist east end of a horse heading west to take final responsibility for the destruction of our way of life.
4. The Demonrats are accurate in accusing Ryano of intending to gut Social Security and Medicare although the Demonrats' fiscal policies are also responsible.
5. He operates in Washington, DC, toting a portable red light, a portable mattress and a sack of quarters, the tools of his trade especially when $$$$$ Wall Street, K Street, US Chamber of Crony Commerce come calling with cash.
6. Did you LISTEN to Nancy Pelosi positively gushing over Ryano and what a WONDERFUL fellow she thinks he is as she ceremonially handled over the gavel???? Were you proud of your little Xaviera Ryano?
7. Obozo was elected in 2008 and 2012 and was "the only viable candidate" and I was not impressed by that either.
8. No honeymoon for Ryano. Resistance to him now and forever. He is no better than Boehner, McCarthy, Cantor, McConnell, Cornyn, Cockroach, and much of the rest of the slime that poses as GOP in DC.
Enjoy Ryano's tenure as he continues to sell us and our country down river to its enemies.
sour grapes bs, drivel,balderdash
Your boy Romney has retired the trophy for utterly useless leftist GOP-E quisling POTUS nominees. See Bush, Jeb, who is a far superior man but still not an acceptable nominee, as the base is proving poll after poll and soon enough in primaries if Jebbie is still standing.
I don’t blame Ryan for Romney but yeah basically your right. I think Republicans have fallen into a trap of thinking they have to support the status quo or they won’t win, and I suspect many in the establishment want the status quo. I’m not sure where Ryan falls but I hope he wakes up. We need to shake it up by nominating Trump/Cruz in 2016.
