Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) won the first round of votes for the job of House Speaker, but 45 Republican legislators voted against him.
Those 45 members are enough to block him from getting the Speakership during the partisan floor vote on Thursday if the 45 GOP legislators maintain their opposition, and if Ryan is not aided by a last-minute bloc of Democratic votes.
During the closed-door conference, Ryan won just 200 votes for the nomination. Former Florida House Speaker Rep. Daniel Webster (R-FL) earned a whopping 43 votes. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)who isnt officially running for Speakerreceived one vote. House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who dropped out of the Speakership race a couple weeks ago, got one vote as well.
The failure on Ryans part to win 218 votesthe threshold for anyone to win the Speakership on the House floor assuming every member of the House is present and voting for a personis a major embarrassment on his part.
The question now becomes whether Ryan will be able to get at 18 of the 45 Republican votes he lost to get behind him on the floor on Thursday. If he cant succeed by the first ballot, the election could go to a second ballot on the floorwhich would likely lead to Ryan’s demise.

Bummer...
The budget deal is killing Ryan. It isn’t Boehner’s deal, but Ryan’s. Unless Ryan shows more mettle, the GOP is costing itself the high ground.
I think your right.Hope this goes through I keep getting blocked.Think about this.Bidden says he’s not running a few days before the hearing. To me that meant the fix was in for the hearings. And it was.Something happened. You think like me.
No to Ryan, we need to call now to ensure he doesn’t make it 202-224-3121
Easy job. Just make a list for those that haven't earned an appointment with Monsieur Guillotine. This would be a very short list (10-15 names maybe). By the time they get to Washington D.C., they've pretty much sold their souls.
Obvious Kabuki/Pressure relief is obvious.
Crap. Nothing is at it seems. They are not patriotic but Republic killing scum. Shame on them.
He will get at least 100 Democrat votes.
This is a done deal. If it’s not him, it will be Steny Hoyer.
If you're going to be a whore for the CoC, at least try to be less obvious and shameless about it.
Your strategy leads to Hoyer, or Pelosi.
Boyle is often full of shiite. Expect Ryan to clear 218 tomorrow
What is sad is that 200 "Republican" members voted for an absolute quisling like Ryan. Ryan is nothing more than Boehner with less of an alcoho; habit and less access to Coppertone. Same whore, different package. Unless you are a lobbyist for the American trust fund babies or the Chamber of Crony Corruption, there is no there, there. If you like Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, Scalise, McConnell, Cornyn, Corker, Cockroach and their ilk, you will LOVE Ryan. Hopefully the 45 patriots who are actual Republicans will hold firm and Ryan will resign from Congress along with the Weeper of the House. Maybe McCarthy can join them.
Their blood is in the water. Attack! Attack! Attack!
You said it.
WHIP HIS ASS. Get on the phone like I have been screaming at my congressman. NO RYno!!
If you were a conservative, you would flip Ryano the bird.
These republicans are finished . We will expel them from our party — GO TRUMP!! A NEW DAY AHEAD!!
Did Gowdy VOTE AGAINST the drunken suntan man’s hand chosen successor Ryano? The answer is no. Gowdy may also leave now.
If we are going to get stuck with Ryan, then by all means let us scorch the earth. Rule or ruin!
I question that math. There are 245 “Republican” members. You say that the Freedom Caucus has 40 members. 45 “Republican” members voted against Ryan: 43 for Webster, 1 for Blackburn and 1 seriously confused idiot for McCarthy. Yet you say that more than half of Freedom Caucus members voted for Ryan. Wanna run those numbers again?
Is there away to find out who voted for Ryno?
