Hastert pleads guilty in hush-money scheme, could get prison term

Dennis Hastert pleaded guilty Wednesday to lying to the FBI in a hush-money scheme, agreeing to a deal with federal prosecutors that recommends he serve no more than six months in prison and averting a trial in the case.

A judge, however, could go beyond that recommendation and give the former House speaker up to five years behind bars.

This guy is going to prison for the "crime" of taking his own money out of the bank.

This crap has been going of for a very long time, and it's gotten worse over the years.

In 1991, I bought a car, and was going to write a check for the full amount (about $12000.) The dealership practically begged for me to not write them a check, as they'd have to fill out extra paperwork. I wrote it anyway, and wound up having to fill out a couple of forms myself.

It's really despicable, and you know the end game will be to outlaw cash altogether, down to buying a pack of chewing gum, so that every transaction has to go through the government.

It is hard to trust anyone anymore. At one point, I would have trusted Dennis Hastert, Bill Cosby, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc. to be alone with my teenagers...male and female.

The male libido and moments of weakness are all powerful for men and many cannot resist no matter what the risk.

I doubt anyone knew. The democrats would have revealed it, the scandal would have been overwhelming.

Hastert was a bad Speaker cause he’s a corrupt RINO, and always has been. I must poo-poo this “mass blackmail conspiracy” theory that’s popular on FR.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings on this, Hastert DESERVES to experience sodomy from the POV of the victim, contract AIDS, and die in a toilet for RAPING young men.

But he’s not been charged with rape, this nonsense he’s been charged with is no real crime, certainly not a jail-worthy offense.

So should I want him to go to jail or should I be pissed another Republican is being prosecuted for tax-reporting nonsense they let democrats skate on?

Hastert isn’t going to do well in prison at this point. He doesn’t look well and appears far older than his age. I expect the judge may take that into consideration.

Wasn’t (at least some of the awful things he did) while he was their high school wrestling coach?

You know, that's the thing. Whatever he did, it must have been really bad, because the assumptions being made in the absence of evidence are really, really bad.

It’s stupidity, not conspiracy. The average politician is where they’re at not because they’re competent, but because they’re corruptible. Hence the need for small government forever. Less opportunities for graft.

I agree that Hastert was too liberal and that his bank withdrawals shouldn’t have been a crime. Congress shouldn’t have passed that law, since it’s no one else’s business how much someone withdraws from his or her bank account.

Have you ever seen “Midnight Express”?

Frightening. And Randy Quaid was “normal” back then too.

i tend to echo your thoughts, especially with regard to the total nonsense he’s actually been charged with. how can it be illegal to take your own lawfully earned money out of your own bank -— just because you happen to get cash

Yep. No sympathy. But Lois Lerner should be in prison for crimes that were tantamount to financial rape.

Agree with Impy and PhilCollins on this. I definitely have mixed feelings about the outcome.

I have no problem with leaving Hastert to rot in prison for being a sicko predator. As others noted, even before we knew he was a pervert, he was ALWAYS a combiner and sleezy politician (nice job getting this guy on your side, Jim Oberweis...)

The problem is the "crime" they convicted him of was withdrawing the "wrong" amount of money from his own bank account. There's something very Orwellian and creepy if the government is allowed to toss people in prison for that. And why the heck isn't the guy who blackmailed Hastert in the first place ALSO going to prison? Blackmail is a much bigger crime that taking "too much money" out of your own bank account.

There's something very fishy about all of this.

The ‘crime’ hastert is being prosecuted for is crap. I agree totally. In spite of his spending his ill gotten congressional gains on the blackmailer, it was his money.

My original comment was about the seeming ‘inability’ of the pubbie congress in the 90’s and early 00’s to get anything conservative accomplished. Not surprising when you think about it. The ‘other side’ knew about Newt’s diddling outside of marriage and Hastert’s issue. And likely Foleys and anyone else of that sort. Their votes were subsequently suspect.

Some of us think that the DC crowd doesn’t allow anyone who is NOT blackmailable to win national elections.

Hastert was a shot over the bow to any congress critters with similar ‘issues’ and the upcoming TPP and Corker amendment votes. It was to ‘get their mind right’ about the upcoming vote.

I was shocked when I read about Hastert doing this. It never occurred to me that he was capable of it. In fact, he struck me as a decent guy who was simply in over his head.

In hindsight, he’s creepy looking. I’d be lying if said I wasn’t very surprised though.

So Clinton’s state of the unions, there were 2 rapists on camera the whole time, jeez.

It would have been EPIC AWFUL if this had come out while he was Speaker.
