A new trend in math at elementary schools around the country has parents pulling out their hair. Mainly because it is the opposite of how most of today's adults were taught to do simple multiplication in the first place.
According to a Common Core math worksheet that's gone viral, an elementary child today cannot just say, "5 x 3 = 15." Instead they have to change the multiplication problem to addition before solving the equation. However, if the child says, "5 + 5 + 5 = 15," they will still lose points because the problem must be written as it is stated. In this case, "five times three" is really stated as "five groups of three," and has to be written as such: "3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15."
This concept has left many parents shaking their heads and throwing their hands up in despair because they can't figure out what it is that their child is supposed to do. Why do you have to add instead of multiply, and why do you have to add the second number five times instead of the first number three times? The biggest question is: "Does it even matter?"

Children are being Taught ,they are being Trained
It looks like the students are supposed to be wrong and the totalitarian teacher is suppose to know everything.
>>What is going on in our schools with these common core, liberal teachers?!!
<<
Did you ever see the “Simpsons” episode where Lisa steals all the teacher’s books (with the answers) and the teachers were all petrified?
That is pretty much it in a nutshell.
That concept is taught to little kids at home...with pennies on the kitchen table. And it’s a concept that is quickly learned. Take the leap and teach them the multiplication tables instead of wasting time on the repetiveness of the concept.
Yep. Pretty much.
You learn the multiplication tables from repetition.
This defeats repetition. JOB DONE!
Obama, the House, the Senate, the SCOTUS, Education, the FBI, our media, dumbing down for success...
It’s across the board...
We’re doomed.
The Ed Establishment/Liberals are systematically removing parents from their kids’ homework. Then, they remove them from their families. Then, they belong to the Liberal Establishment.
We’re luck to be as high as 28th in education achievement globally.
We’re preparing the finest basket weavers of tomorrow.
The creator of common core admitted it was made to destroy learning.
He said that “equalized” the smart kids (advantaged) with the stupid kids (disadvantaged).
Common Core is deliberate obfuscation, with the purpose being to inhibit advanced learning. The “rules” are arbitrary, and have no application in the real world.
What? Really????
As a retired Science teacher with 35 years in, Methinks this Common Core is pretty FKD up!
Kids don’t all earn the same way. Some learn by counting by fives. Some memorize the multiplication table. Other count on their fingers. Some add. Some see colors or it just pops into their heads. You do it your way and I’ll do it mine but as long as we come up with the right answer it’s all good. These cc teachers need to relax their sphincters.
If I understand the problem and the “correct” answer wouldn’t
(1+1+1 = 3) + (1+1+1 = 3) + (1+1+1 = 3) + (1+1+1 = 3) + (1+1+1 = 3) = 15 also be correct? There would be several other permutations as well but I’m not going to type them all out.
Why not just teach the kids to count on their fingers, toes or other anatomical structures? Maybe let them use other kids anatomy as well.
Bkmrk.
So, how do you do 4.23 x 6.57?
What ever happened to just memorizing the tables up to 12 like we all had to do, you know the people that did spaceflight, the internet, and the computer revolution?
