Police chiefs from across the United States called on Monday for universal background checks for firearms purchases, saying opinion polls consistently show that most Americans support such restrictions.
The proliferation of firearms is one of the factors behind a rise in homicide rates in many U.S. cities this year, according to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago.

Many newspapers are now forcing commenters to use Facebook, so I joined them last year only for that purpose. I tried posting a pro-gun comment there and got this message:
“The content you requested cannot be displayed right now. It may temporarily be unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page.”
Normally, I’d blow this as just another Internet glitch, but this is the third “problem” I have had with Facebook in posting, whereas before, they went through fine.
Anyone else using this medium having this problem? I am viewing this as culling out the pro-gun comments or banning pro-gun commenters.
"Governments are instituted among men...deriving the just powers from the CONSENT of the governed."
It's time we stop consenting, plain & simple.
Sounds like an infringement to me.
They are so STUPID they don’t know the definition of infringed. They have to be FIRST on the cleansing list after Congress.
I have met and dealt with several members that have found that out...yet they continue to send dues and pledge drive money to them
What few know is that the dues and pledge drive money comes out of the city coffers...your tax money.
There are very few, damned few, that actually dig into their own pocket and pay for the membership themselves.
Those that do are stupid.
Same for the Fraternal Order of Police.
The biggest advantage to that stupid bunch of grifters is the tag you can get that announces to all other police that you are a fellow grifter.
I would love to see a map with all the shootings over the last 10 years. I also would like to see the race of the perpetrator and the victim. I’m pretty certain that information would show us exactly where the problem is. I think we all know the answer already.
I propose:
Background checks before you can steal a firearm.
Background checks before you can buy a stolen weapon.
Background checks before you can buy or sell illegal drugs.
Background checks before you can commit drive-by shootings or spree killings.
Background checks before you an enter the country illegally.
Oh. The Police Chiefs aren’t interested in stopping crime, just in making law-abiding citizens into criminals so they can raid their homes, maybe confiscate some property. It’s good for business.
This is the worst of all cop unions. They are a totalitarian gang.
Yet a lot of “conservatives” reflexively side with these goons. Either they’re just old folks who think it’s 1971 or cynical talk radio “conservatives” who always side with cops because that’s what their elderly listeners expect.
I don’t much care what U.S. police chiefs call for. The Constitution says otherwise. What part of “shell not be infringed” do they fail to understand?
There is no second amendment exclusion of the criminal or the crazy from the right to self defense, either. If you should not be armed, you should not be running around loose.
The Constitution does not provide for any gun purchase to be deemed "illegal". So there's no such thing as a "legal" gun purchase.
I am calling for the U.S. police chiefs identified in this to be fired and slapped across the face with a dead carp several times until they get the thought that they do not control my life.
Is there a full list with the cities they allegedly serve?
Police chiefs are employees of politicians, so they will say what they are told to say.
Elected sheriffs, OTOH, broadly support the 2nd amendment.

Bunkum. Before 1968 there were no gun control laws and anyone with CASH could buy a gun from a gas station, hardware store, clothing store, saddle shop, through the mails, and many other places.
Crime was low because, if you murdered someone you could get a quick date with Old Sparky or the hangman’s noose. Yes, some innocents were put to death, but it was still enough to keep the rest of us on the straight and narrow.
Now the fear of Old Sparky is gone and it may take years before you get the needle.
I agree with the intent of the Constitution but if you purchase a gun in a store they will not sell it to you unless you agree to a background check.
Tell the police chiefs to get tough on gun crime and leave the rest of us alone. They know the criminals don’t get their weapons at gun stores. Its so disingenuous I could puke.
That is correct, which is one reason never to buy at a gun store. Not because you fear failing a background check, but because the regime knows you are armed and you are put on the “list”.
Yet even the NRA and other pro-firearms organizations do not appear to care enough to constantly push to have those illegal restrictions (infringements!) removed. Or their pushes are not covered in the media, maybe. (Surprise, surprise!)
Today I treid with the same ID and got the same message. Tried under a different one and got through.
Gotta love that liberal respect for “diverse thought”.
Still can’t post on the Los Angeles Times articles though.
