I for one, have no doubt this was planned. As in ‘96, ‘08 and ‘12, the party leaders do not want to win.
Now look at the four front runners for the Uniparty nomination and ask yourself; Can he beat Hillary and the press and the Democrats and the Cochran wing of the Republican party?

Gowdy may have meant well, or he may have been in the tank for the GOPe.
Either way he screwed up big time. He needed to have specific and serious charges to bring against Hillary, or else he should have just cancelled her testimony.
The only good news is that now that Hillary has been rehabilitated, there are no worries that the GOPe has to go up against Biden, who I believe they feared more than Hillary.
It's impossible to determine how closely they came to reaching their goal without knowing exactly what they were trying to prove. I think that they should have come to some agreement on an effort to prove one or two significant facts and to forget all the trivia. I don't think that anyone can say exactly what "they" were trying to prove because I don't think that the representatives had a uniform strategy.
If by large you mean, "several" or "not very many" then yes. It's not clear that Rolling Stone is even going to be making payroll much longer. But their influence ended decades ago.
I saw a headline on Yahoo saying something to the effect that the hearing was an opportunity for Hillary to act presidential. I guess lying is presidential to some folks.
