In Ego, Obama and Trump Are Two Of A Kind
Townhall.com ^ | October 24, 2015 | Jeff Jacoby

ARE YOU crazy about Barack Obama? Do you fervently hope the next president of the United States will be as similar to the current president as possible?

Then Donald Trump may be the candidate for you.

Of all the candidates running for president, the one who most resembles the incumbent is not Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders or Martin O'Malley. To be sure, the Democrats' policy views largely overlap with Obama's. But when it comes to attitude and self-image, it's Obama and Trump who are birds of a feather.

Everyone knows about Donald Trump's bottomless narcissism; this is a man who has affixed the name "Trump" to everything from hotels to golf courses to cologne. Asked the other day which world leaders he would reach out to upon being elected, Trump replied that he wouldn't need to call anyone: "I think I'd probably have them call me."

But Obama's march to the White House also involved startling displays of self-glorification, from Greek-style columns to a triumphal foreign tour to his own official seal (complete with Latin motto). From the earliest days of his presidency, it was clear that Obama was deeply enamored of himself, and had no doubt that the rest of the planet was just as smitten. "I am well aware," he told the UN General Assembly, "of the expectations that accompany my presidency around the world." He gifted the queen of England with an iPod that included his own speeches. Obama's addiction to the first-person singular pronoun — "I," "me," "my" — has been remarked on by many; he has even referred to "my military" and the troops "fighting on my behalf."

Anyone who finds such vanity attractive should relish the prospect of a Trump presidency. Trump, after all, never doubts his own brilliance. He's always the smartest person in the room; just ask him. Sound familiar?

"I'm a better speechwriter than my speechwriters," Obama told campaign aides in 2008. "I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I'll tell you right now that I'm gonna think I'm a better political director than my political director."

When a presidential candidate talks that way, what could possibly go wrong?

‘’...he is certainly lacking in any outward form of humility…’’

Gumdrop, to what do you ascribe TRUMP’s self-deprecating sense of humor (pokes fun at himself) & his insistence on saying ‘’IF I win’’ after 100 days of being the frontrunner by a wide margin?
Egotistical people & narcissists aren’t known for either of those things.

In Texas (0r maybe it’s the whole South), we have a saying- It ain’t braggin if ya
done it. There’s a reason why a New York yankee with a Jackie Mason accent has caught fire in the South & we love him: TRUMP is real. His heart is USDA 100% RED, WHITE, & BLUE.
He could have 100 times the money & glamour he’s got & he’d still be one of us.

I agree with Trump’s polices and disagree with Obama’s polices, they are not alike one wit.

And, that is reported to have improved his attitude.

There is nothing wrong with an anger if it is righteous. Someone looking to love America would need to get pretty mad about where it’s going.

Or, more realistically, two to four billion.

There are tired old strawmen about his claiming to have become a conservative.

He hasn’t, he has claimed to take the interests of America under his wing. And in doing so he has tweaked a lot of soi disant conservatives.

He’s like one of us with money.

That’s why he’s so popular.

He’s living the negotiation model. He’s saying, do you want me to win? And the “me” that will win, is (to an extent) offered in negotiation to you.

I don’t think so. He claims to now be pro-life, pro 2nd amendment pro-low taxes, pro-market base healthcare reform.

Not so long ago, he was pro-abort, pro-gun control, pro-wealth confiscation through a direct wealth tax, and pro-single -payer for healthcare. I think YOU are cavilling by arguing about “conservative conversion.”

I agree with you. Trump is a ray of hope which I had frankly thought would never be seen again. He is far from perfect, but his talents far exceed any of the other contenders. Above all, he isn’t owned by anyone.Perhaps he is little like Ali who shot off his mouth before every fight and then went on to prove he was the best, big mouth and all.
Nothing in the world is certain but death and taxes. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Unfortunately too many people have forgotten what made America great. Americans were always a people who took risks. Europeans are adverse to risk taking and it has been the largest reason for their downfall and the reason for their adherence to so called “security” at the price of liberty..

That he is not, as is claimed, a “self-made billionaire.” That he is a competent businessman, but not a business genius. That he has no specia l competency, attributable to his non-existent business genius, to be president.

Exactly! All these years, all the people we see at these rallies (apparently) have been twisting in the wind, watching our country going down down down. Then, we find out that someone who CAN do something about it, has been right there, too. And he’s HAD IT.
You better believe we’re havin a collective Oh HALLELUJAH!

He’s said he’d leave the entitlement alone. I don’t know how he pays f o r his tax plan. Outside of rntitlements, defense, and interest on the debt, there’s not enough budget.

I think so. It strikes me, too, that when he talks about all the love in the room at his rallies, he’s not talking about love for him. He’s talking about love for America.

It’s a very 2 way exchange. He’s confirming (or affirming, I guess) that we’ve all seen the same things & we want it put right.

Agreed. Outright charity did well until it was “taken over by the government.” As in almost if not everything taken over by the government charity was transformed. We’re on the same wavelength.

To help your research,Fred and Mary Trump had FIVE children: Maryanne, Fred Jr., Elizabeth, Donald, and Robert. They inherited equally.

I didn’t say he’s a nobody. I said he’s a successful businessman who did well with his large inheritance. I merely said he is not also a “self-made billionaire “ business genius. He’s a successful crony capitalist who was born into wealth and privilege and did well with the wealth and privilege given to him.

But, while we’re at it, I wouldn’t vote for a REAL self-made billionaire (Buffett, Gates, Ellison, etc.) So it’s nothing personal.

In that people were forced to pay it with the politically-generated expectation that they would recieve benefits according to a formula base on their required Social Security taxes, it is, at least morally, an entitlement. In this case, quibbling is unworthy. The original poster’s comments stand.

Two to four Billion is NOT realistic if you’re talking about his inheritance. Cite your source!

It is you who said trump’s relatively much smaller fortune required more... whatever... than just trading stocks, I guess to build trump up and to denigrate the others. Your argument is in shreds.

Trump’s no angel but I believe he’s the best of the bunch at this point. I also think he’s sincere and has no other motive than he really believes he can turn things around.
