Rubio backs Cruz on tougher penalties for illegal immigrants

Sen. Marco Rubio is backing a push to increase penalties for undocumented immigrants who reenter the country after previously being deported.

The Florida Republican signed onto legislation from fellow 2016 White House hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday, according to the Congressional Record.

Under Cruz's legislation, undocumented immigrants face additional prison time if they reenter the country after being deported, including a minimum five-year sentence if they were previously convicted of an aggravated felony or of illegally reentering the country twice.

The Texas Republican is expected to come to the Senate floor next week to try to pass the legislation — which is referred to as Kate's Law after Kathryn Steinle, who was shot and killed in San Francisco allegedly by an illegal immigrant who had already been deported five times.

Cruz will need to get the consent of every senator to be successful. In addition to Rubio, Sens. David Perdue (R-Ga.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and David Vitter (R-La.) have backed Cruz's legislation.

Democrats, however, blocked a bill from Vitter Tuesday that included similar language as part of a broader bill crackdown on cities that don't comply with federal immigration law.

Rubio called the vote "outrageous."

"No one involved in this debate understands this issue better than I do," Rubio told Newsmax TV's "The Hard Line." "I understand immigration, the good, the bad and the ugly, but this part is not good — this part about people who are openly violating our laws."

Rubio has received skepticism from conservatives over his role in a 2013 immigration reform proposal, which he has since distanced himself from.

RE: Rubio backs Cruz on tougher penalties for illegal immigrants

I can’t help but wonder if Rubio actually and REALLY believes in this.... or is he just doing it to win over the base that’s most concerned about illegal immigration...

I can’t help but think Rubio will flip on this.

Cruz/Rubio might not be a bad ticket.

I’d prefer Cruz/Palin or as a last resort Trump/Cruz.

Going to be an interesting year.

Those illegals KNOW that they WILL get work here, from companies and from families who want CHEAP labor and have to pay NO socials security, unemployment and other benefits for them. American greed financial planning keeps the illegals hard at work.

There are places in EVERY city and town where the illegals hang out in the morning knowing that the prospective employers will come by and CHOOSE.

WE gringos keep the illegals employed but NO ONE wants the government to punish the Americans who hire the illegals. So the illegals will keep coming.

Besides the illegals don't WANT any deductions from their paychecks. It's money out of their pocket as far as they are concerned. Works both ways, don't it?
We have made our own problem and we know it.

I agree Rubio will flip on this. He is for Dreamer, Schemers, lawless trespassers. Rubio is OK with welfare, food stamps and medical care for illegals.

He is like Romney a flip flopper. A member of a DC Steet Gang called the Gang of Eight-balls.

Nice he shows up to work once and a while.

Penalties? Stupid.

How do you impose a penalty on someone who is invisible?

Build the wall.

Cruz and Rubio sound good. I don't know how the rest of the GOP would take to an all-Hispanic ticket but, why not?
Trump would work with either one. He and Palin would probably NOT work.

I think Palin would not work. I always liked her but ... I still don't think this country will elect a woman as POTUS. [My own opinion, nothing else.]

It WILL be an interesting year.

I can't STAND even looking at Hitlery, let alone listening to her. She and Sleaze-Bucket are a PERFECT match.

So...the solution is to house them at taxpayer expense for five years while they build up their criminal networking inside out country?

I’d rather just build a wall and make it a lot harder for them to get in in the first place.

You have a problem with additional prison time for illegals?

LOL.

Build wall. Add additional prison time.

Another one.

As if a wall alone will stop the problem.

Won’t completely solve the problem...but it’s a good place to start. Just look at Israel and Hungary. Walls are helping there, even if they don’t stop every single last invader. They cut out 90-95% of them.

It’s certainly better than just throwing them in the klink at taxpayer expense. Especially given how cushy American jails are, compared to most others.

I will not ever vote for Marco Rubio. He has one of the worst voting records on immigration in congress, Democrat or Republican.

Rubio is a two-bit huckster, utterly transparent from day one, years ago.
