The Scary Specter of Ted Cruz (NYT)
New York Times ^ | OCT. 21, 2015 | Frank Bruni

Posted on 10/21/2015 12:10:05 PM PDT by Isara

...

His campaign has more cash on hand than that of any other Republican in the hunt. If you add “super PAC” money that’s been officially disclosed so far to the tally, he trails only Jeb and Hillary Clinton.

...

He’s the patron saint of lost causes, at least if they bring the spotlight his way. In that sense he’s emblematic of the flamboyantly uncompromising comrades in the so-called Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives, who similarly confuse attention with accomplishment.

All of them, with Cruz as their spiritual leader, have turned petulance into a theory of governing, or rather anti-governing, as they breezily disregard the contradiction of their ravenous lunge to become monarchs of a kingdom that they supposedly want to topple, to gain power over a system that they ostensibly intend to enfeeble.

Cruz doesn’t propose remedies. He performs rants. He’s not interested in collaboration or teamwork. His main use for other politicians, even in his party, is as foils and targets. Paul Ryan got a taste of that over the weekend, when Cruz, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” was asked if Ryan was a true conservative and dodged the question, withholding his blessing.

He should be careful about genuineness versus phoniness, given the problems with his own prairie-populist pose.

Cruz’s law degree is from Harvard and he did his undergraduate work at Princeton, where the 250-year-old debating club that he belonged to is called the American Whig-Cliosophic Society. Cruz’s wife is on leave from a job with Goldman Sachs.

Keep that in mind when he rails against the establishment and the elites. And remember that when someone is as broadly and profoundly disliked as Cruz is, it’s usually not because he’s a principled truth teller.

It’s because he’s frightening.

Trump actually knows about strategy and negotiations. He’s done it for decades at the highest level.

Cruz hasn’t negotiated for squat. He is not a leader and he can’t get anyone to follow him except Mike Lee.

Those two are far from the only conservatives in the Senate but he’s so arrogant and stupid that no one wants to go along with his hair-brained ideas.

And let’s not forget, he’s for keeping the invaders here in the country instead of deporting them. He still is for amnesty even though he’s tricked a few people (thankfully no more than 4-5%) into thinking otherwise.

Do you think that chart on Trump is accurate?

The reality is that chart ignores reality to report out the way it does.

You, sir, are really worth ignoring.

Mistaken on -- or mischaracterizing -- everything.

Ted Cruz won’t give a straight answer about deportation:

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/08/megyn-kelly-ted-cruz-immigration-question-121756

He’s a weasel and you’ve been tricked.

Here’s a direct quote from him about deportation:

“And the way you solve the problem is you focus where there’s bipartisan agreement first. Once we’ve secured the border, once we’ve proven we can do this, once we’ve stopped the Obama administration’s policy of releasing 104,000 violent criminal illegal aliens in one year. Once we’ve solved that problem, then we can have a debate, then we can have a conversation.”

Cruz’s words are no different than those of John Boner.

And that's the smartest answer, strategically (though not politically).

We should approach the illegal immigrant invasion as if it were a war. Meaning you don't tip off exactly how you'll fight it, win it or when you'll end it.

Secure the border is definitely the first step, along with enforcing workplace laws and denying most public assistance to illegals. Let's see how many self-deport. Then, let's deal with what's left.

I heard his answer. And he answered it exactly as I would've, were I in his position. There's nothing in it that you can argue with. And that was not Boehner's answer, by the way.

“Cruz’s law degree is from Harvard and he did his undergraduate work at Princeton, .... Cruz’s wife is on leave from a job with Goldman Sachs.

“Keep that in mind when he rails against the establishment and the elites.”

OK now, did Mr. Bruni write comparable stories about the Ivy-educated (Columbia/Princeton/Harvard) Obamas? How about Mrs. Obama’s $300K+ job in community outreach at U of Chicago hospital that she waltzed into after he won his Senate seat? If anyone has built a career railing against the elites it’s Obama.

You’re right.

Trump is vastly worse than that whitewash portrays, and every Freeper owes it to their progeny to dig in and learn the truth about this life long liberal democrat masquerading as Ted Cruz’ twin brother.

That chart on Trump is demonstrably false.

Take the 2nd Amendment. Trump’s platform paper on 2nd Amendment rights has been deemed to be quite good. None the less, he is given a sub-par rating.

Levin should know better than that and so should you.

There are a number of things in the grading system that are simply wrong. The one issue against Ted is also wrong.

I like Levin, but he isn’t pinhead proof. At times he can be one. This chart is an example of that.

Ted Cruz has advocated a 60’ wall on our southern border? Ted has advocated rounding up the illegals and sending them home?

Hmmmm...

Budget: Cruz has made massive financial deals, has put tens of thosuands of people to work, has run a billion dollar business, and protected a bottom line.  Next flight of fantasy...
Civil Liberties: Trump has said he'll round up and deport illegal immigrants, build a wall that is 60 feet tall along our border.  This results in his red marker on civil liberties.  No sale.
Free Market: The "FREE MARKET"...  Nothing in life is free.  The cost of this "FREE MARKET" has been tens of millions of U. S. jobs.  Trump wants to bring them back.  That warrants a red marker.  LOL
Health Care and Entitlements: Trump has proposed a private sector replacement of Obamacare.  He wants to reduce entitlements as part of getting the budget under control.  This red marker is simply proposterous.
Moral issues:  What moral issues?  Good grief.  Name one moral issue Trump has a problem with.
Second Amendment:  This is simply a fraud.  Trump has a paper on Second Amendment rights, and it's recognized as a good one.
Taxes, Economy, and Trade:  Trump's tax position is good.  His economic experience is second to very few U. S. Citizens.  His trade view are more solid than any other candidate's.

In Cruz's favor, his free market mark isn't deserved either.

Trump is the go to guy because of his economic experience.  He is solid on other issues as well, but second to illegal immigration, our national debt and related matters are vitally important and need to be addressed.  Trump is the only candidate with the experience necessary to do that.

Cruz supporters are pleased to drop this bomb on the forum.

It isn't an accurate display on Trump.  As such it's actually a smear on Cruz when his supporters tout it as a reason to support Cruz.  What they should be doing is pointing out the obvious flaws in this ranking.  And RANK is the proper word here....
