Paul Ryan's conditional run for speaker is fell flat with at least one key conservative Tuesday night, who said his candidate remains Rep. Daniel Webster, a member who is pledging to end the "top down" leadership approach.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., head of the House Tea Party Caucus, called Ryan's conditions for becoming the next speaker "entirely unreasonable." Those conditions include a request that the House eliminate a rule that allows a member to seek a vote to oust the speaker. That provision is part of the original rules of the House, authored by Thomas Jefferson.
"No other speaker I know of would ever have as much power as Paul Ryan asked for himself," Huelskamp said following a meeting among Republican lawmakers. "Is he serious?"
Ryan outlined his conditions in the meeting but took no questions, Huelskamp said. Webster, who is now the only other official candidate for speaker, was not allowed time to address the conference.
Ryan told the conference he would run only if he wins the endorsement of the major House factions, including the moderates and conservatives.
Huelskamp said he also found unsettling Ryan's plan to return home on the weekends, rather than work in the Capitol or attend fundraisers for House GOP candidates. Ryan said he wanted to avoid travel in order to spend time with his family.

We don’t “need” Ryan. Keep a weakened Boner in there until Trump wins the election. We need to purge the Republican elites.
Ryan seems to have at least implied, “My way or nothing.”
In other words he doesn’t want to be Speaker of the House, he wants that changed to Dictator of the House, making his rule and reign one that cannot be challenged, no dissension from anybody at anytime for any reason.
Might as well let Nazi Pewlousy openly run the show rather than covertly behind some weak figurehead as she does now.
Tell Ryan no thanks - it’s that simple.
Agreed.
Loyalty oaths are so 1930’s.
-——”entirely unreasonable.” ——
he said he wouldn’t negotiate but one wonders what would induce this conservative to drop the onerous requirement?
Loyalty oaths are so 1930s.
**************************************
True dat. Look how well Germany requiring that Germans in government take loyalty oaths to Hitler worked out for Germany & the Germans.
I think the POMPOUS PAUL RYAN can put his conditions where the sun doesn’t shine.
Seriously? Speakers punishing dissent is as American as a baseball pie. There's never been a Speaker, certainly not an effective one, that didn't enforce dicipline.
Ryan is saying just that. If the Freedom Caucus buckles they will simply get a more forceful Boner.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan’s demands are intentionally over-the-top so he can back out. He doesn’t want the job - the establishment wants him, but he doesn’t want to have to do all of the extra **** that the job comes with, like the fundraising and travel, and he also is chair of the most powerful committee in Congress, arguably more powerful than the Speakeership itself. And with far less headache.
No, I think he’s making it easy for him to say “sorry guys, I tried, but it ain’t gonna work”.
That would save the Country a pile of cash to have this clown in there...Send everyone else home...They’re all going to vote yea on Ryan’s declarations so he can just place one vote for all of them...
That’s not why these Reps are sent to Washington...They are to represent their respective States, NOT the speaker of the house...
He thinks he’s Trump.
At this point I would not be shocked if the RINOs defect and vote with the Dems to put someone like Steny Hoyer in the Speaker’s chair.
Any Congressman who would have the temerity to DEMAND immunity from removal as Speaker should be denied the Speaker of the House leadership along with all committee assignments and membership in the House of Representatives.
Seems like Ryan doesn’t like representative government. I say flush him!
“I wonder if Reprehensible Ryan really thinks his demands will fly.”
Doubt it.
More than likely it’s just a way to keep Bonehead as speaker since he said he would stay speaker until another is elected.
I’m convinced this Ryan business is part of the Establishment’s move to give Trump trouble.
Ryan is diametrically opposed to everything Trump stands for. The Freedom Caucus would be fooools to entertain his candidacy, throw out the vacate option, affirm their allegiance to him, and lose their position against cram downs.
