Cruz isn’t the second choice of Trump voters

The FOX national poll also asked the first/second choice question, but did not provide direct tabs of the share of Trump backers who chose Cruz, et al, as their second choice. It did, however, do the next best thing: it gave the entire GOP race standings if Trump were out. Trump polled 26 percent in the overall standings and Cruz polled 8 percent. Without Trump, Cruz rose to 11 percent, a three point gain. Three divided by 26 is about 11 1/2 percent, nearly identical to the thirteen percent from the other two polls.

This might seem to be too low given that Cruz is actively courting Trump and his backers. But the PPP poll suggests that effort is not yet paying off. Cruz’s name ID among Trump backers is only 47 percent positive, 37 percent negative. He still has a lot of selling to do before Trumpets think “Ted Cruz” when their thoughts stray from His Hairness.

Now, there are plenty of scenarios in which I can imagine Cruz will do well with current Trump supporters. If Cruz breaks through in Iowa and Bush recovers to win New Hampshire, for example, he could pick up loads of Trump supporters in an ensuing one-on-one. Or if Ben Carson, who currently is the Trump backers’ favorite second choice, fades, perhaps the junior Senator from Texas will gain those voters love.

You think so? Many are saying that but there is no real proof.

I really haven’t seen them go after Cruz though.

You do know he’s half white, right?

I do think we will not see another black president for a long while.

As long has the Constitution is the law of the land, Cruz will never be president of the USA. The Rats will eat him alive on the NBC issue.

The birther ship sailed with Obama. Nobody cares any more.

Anyway...

This is why I can’t fully get behind Cruz. Some of these candidates wants to flood this nation with “guest workers” and illegal and legal immigrants.

Remember how the media said Newt was only in the last election to sell his book?

I wonder if that is what Carson is doing.

“But I do say that I’ve never seen a bigger pain in the ass than Cruz and his follow up badgering for more money after donating. Endless mail and emails to the point I regret ever donating (four times). No more, he’s too much. I have been bothered so much by the Cruz organization that I now regret donating because it is like I became a target of a stalker.”

I had the same problem with the Huckabee campaign. I didn’t donate but I signed a Kim Davis petition to get her out of jail. The petition was linked to Huckabee’s campaign site! The emails were relentless!!

It makes me mad because I don't get politically active to become bothered by someone.

Not everyone in my house is conservative.

My wife who has become a citizen this year after 22 years of doing it legally was originally from Mexico and even though she pays LOTS of taxes (I think we paid way over 30k and $9000 for the three of us for bad health insurance), the bottom line is she has a lot of family in need connected to the dole.

So though she knows deep inside that this is kind of like theft and even she complains about all this to me, she still likes Democrats because they help the cause of her poor family relations IMO.
She also gets from all sides that Americans stole California from Mexico. Mexico pushes this and so does the California educational system all the way through Santa Monica College so far.

I try to explain how deficits and giveaways will kill the country.
I think she gets it but still wants all these programs out there for the poor in abundance.
IMO you have temporary safety nets but if illegal you get out and if not dying you should work after months. We can't have 3 out of ten people supporting the other 7.

This brings me back to Cruz, he sends a letter begging for money and written to you like he is talking to a six year old. These get mailed to me at least 12 times a month.
The wife opens one yesterday and starts reading all 4 pages of this single spaced letter and semi-mocking the repeated phrases within from the Cruz camp.

I love being who I am and conservative, but why do these people running have to constantly mail spam to the house?
In my case I did not need to have these letters mailed to my home. It is ridiculous. It causes problems within the family if the family is not lock stepped in one direction.

Huckabee in all honesty is an arm of the GOPe and the Jeb Bush campaign. He plays the role of the disrupter against Trump, Cruz and Doctor Carson.
He grandstanded Davis to get on TV.
He is not real IMO.

I don’t view Donald Trump as the lesser of two evils. I view Donald Trump as probably the only thing standing between the start of correcting the country’s problems and a counter revolution. Anybody else running does not have the ability to win the general election and does not have the force of personality to effect significant change.

It depends on how you define amnesty. Yes, Cruz has fought against executive amnesties, i.e., Obama's 2012 Dreamer amnesty and the current, ongoing one that has been stalled in the courts.

Cruz has never favored deportation of the 11 to 20 million lawbreakers. His amendment to the Gang of 8 bill did not include removing legalization from the bill. Instead, he proposed not allowing the lawbreakers a path to citizenhip, a dubious proposal at best given the courts.

Allowing the lawbreakers to stay and work here is amnesty whether you have a path to citizenship or not. Cruz is an amnesty supporter even if he disputes Obama's method of achieving it.

What you are saying is that if (God Forbid) something happened to Trump tomorrow that kept him from being the candidate, then all is lost.

Sorry, but I don't buy that.

I have been watching Cruz for years.

He has held the same line pretty well the entire time. He has faced down the GOPee in the Senate.

What's not to like?

As far as being "too conservative" (your comment), anything less is a lesser evil.

Back to the seminal question. Given a choice of voting for someone a little "too conservative" Huh??! versus the liberal, why wouldn't the Republican voters vote for the Conservative?

We have never had this problem, except, perhaps, with Ronald Reagan, and we saw how that played out.

I guess I have to repeat myself again on the same thread. I like Ted Cruz fine. I’m a conservative. Ted Cruz is polling between 6%-8%. Before Trump got in the race Cruz was not polling well and now he’s not polling well. By what miracle do you see Cruz surging to surpass 28%-34%?

One of the reasons Cruz is not polling well is that he’s too conservative for the AVERAGE GOP voter. That’s not you and me. The AVERAGE GOP voter is middle of the road or slightly to the right of center. This is not new. Its always been this way which is why a conservative hardly ever gets the nomination. If they do get the nomination then they face the hardship of trying to woo the independent voter who is on average middle of the road or slightly right of center.

Ted Cruz has almost no path to the nomination and a poor chance of winning the general election.

Donald Trump appeals to a broad section of America and a broad section of the GOP base. That’s why he is likely going to get the nomination and win the general election.

Donald Trump is using the Obama tactic of presenting a nicely framed blank slate and letting people draw what they want to see on it. He has media exposure and name recognition, and that is why he is leading.

Now, I hope that works out well, and would vote for him over the Democrat, but it is what it is.

Ted doesn't have that sort of exposure, and as long as Donald has the microphone he won't get it. The MSM will play Trump on the airwaves because they are less afraid of him.

I have a couple of key issues, and one of them is Obamacare. I want that crap repealed because I recognize just how badly that can be used against small business, including sole proprietorships. By this time next year, it will have cost me my health insurance, and with the taxing authority of the IRS behind an insane penalty structure, could conceivably cost me my house, finally paid off.

Anyone who would let that stand is NOT someone I would consider for POTUS.

The MSM plays Trump on the airwaves because they get fantabulous viewership. Everyone wants to watch his rallies and his interviews. So he does have a leg up on everyone else due to that. Like I said Trump has broad appeal.

If you want Obamacare repealed as do I then Trump is on your plus list. He rightly thinks its a disaster and wants to repeal it and replace it. I like his plan a lot better than the pathetic crap coming out of Bush and the GOP leadership. The whole reason we even have Obamacare is that during the 8 long years GW was in office the GOP Congress could not or would not come up with a simple patch to cover the few million people who were uninsured.

I recall Trump lauding single payer programs.

One size fits all?

Most of the uninsured were uninsured by choice.

If we paid the bill for the rest when they were sick or injured, we'd have been way ahead.

For those who have lost jobs, been fined for not providing insurance with contraceptives and abortion benefits, etc, there is no consolation in any one size fits all package if we get stuck for not buying something which contains things we find morally repugnant and religiously incompatible.

Besides, there are many who are exempt, but Christians aren't one of the groups.

Many of us have lost or will soon lose insurance because supposedly we are insuring the uninsured or uninsurable.

{I think the big push for this came from those at high risk of AIDS in DC, who have made tremendous inroads since (from their point of view), redefining marriage and in other areas as well.}

In the meantime, we have huge unemployment (and growing), and those of us who had small businesses and who provided our own medical insurance are going to get shat upon like no group of people in the history of this country.
