‘Sanctuary cities’ divide GOP (Jeff Flake, Mike Lee, Dean Heller attempting to derail bill)
The Hill ^ | 10/11/15 | Jordain Carney

A battle over “sanctuary cities” is dividing Senate Republicans.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has teed up legislation that would crack down on cities that don't comply with federal immigration law.

But its unclear whether the bill can get through the Senate — and not just because of opposition from Democrats.

In addition to limiting federal money for sanctuary cities, Sen. David Vitter's (R-La.) bill would increase the amount of prison time an undocumented immigrant could serve if they re-enter the United States after having previously been deported. Conservatives like his plan, but it has drawn opposition from Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Mike Lee (Utah.), who have concerns about broadly applying mandatory minimum sentences for undocumented immigrants.

-snip-

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) wants to link Vitter’s bill to immigration reform.

“We haven't had a discussion here for two years. For two years we haven't had a discussion and so all the sudden we're going to bring up an immigration issue and not talk about the bigger issue,” Heller said.

The Nevada Republican didn't detail what would be included in his proposal, instead describing it as "comprehensive immigration reform."

Heller added that he hasn't decided whether he’ll back Vitter’s bill if he can’t get his own amendment attached.

2010.
Review what he has said since then.
They say a lot to get elected.
If he was not for amnesty now, he should say it unequivocally.
He won’t.

“Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) wants to link Vitter’s bill to immigration reform.”

Yeah so we can hide plenty of garbage in it that nobody will read.

Time to light up the phones.

Heller is good on certain issues (card check, 2A, etc.), then he pulls stuff like this on the one killing Nevada the most — immigration.

If that’s the case, it’s just another example why we’re pi__ed off.

the proposed bill would allow any foreigner who invests $500,000K in residential real estate to earn a three-year residential visa

So drug dealers, human traffickers, "friendly rebels" who sold US stuff to ISIS, ISIS members who looted historic artifacts in Iraq and Syria, will be given three-year residencies? And that $500,000 in real estate? What's to stop them from being slum landlords and/or housing terrorists and illegals?

WHAT COULD GO WRONG??

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nevada) wants to link Vitter’s bill to immigration reform.

And this is part of the reason so much lousy garbage gets passed. It seems as if nothing is ever voted up or down on its own... it's always linked to or part of some other massive bill.

We can probably get a massive amount of immigration "reform" merely by acting like a country that was sincere about guarding its borders and enforcing the laws in existence.

Has Cruz explained his position on H1B visas? I haven’t really dug into his position but know there are some concerns.

Lee’s opposition is based solely on mandatory minimum sentencing. He and Durbin authored a bill called the Smart Sentencing Act that gives judges greater discretion on non-violent drug offenses.

Mandatory minimum sentences are a scourge on the legal system. They are not a deterrent, cost way too much money to enforce, and significantly impact families in poor communities where two-parent influence is most needed.

That said, opposing mandatory minimums for illegal aliens is absurd.

Dean Heller—”comprehensive immigration reform.”

It’s amazing how much cleaning we need to do in the Senate. Similar to Hercules and the Augean stables. I.e., an overwhelming amount of manure.

H1B-Visas will increase no matter who is President....the US is not going to be isolated from the Global Agenda to move and facilitate the ‘Global Workforce’. Large Corporations will make certain to fight for these every inch of the way... We may slow it down but it’s going to happen.

Cruz wants to increase ‘high-skilled’ H1B visas in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields where there appears to be a shortage of workers in our educational system...(estimated 230,000 advanced-degree STEM jobs going unfilled by 2018)..... It will make ‘block grants’ available to states to promote STEM education efforts and increase domestic STEM professionals.

Cruz and Trump both want to keep people here to open businesses etc. rather than in their own home country.

"“Amnesty” is where , for example, a Mexican crosses our border, sucks of the largess of welfare ,medical care and education while he repeatly commits crimes but we give the illegal bastard citizenship."

Negative. Awarding legal status to that individual is "amnesty".

Citizenship is not the ultimate goal of the majority of Illegals and there's plenty of legal immigrants who don't desire it either. Withholding something they don't want from someone isn't much of a penalty.

Cruz is from Texas. We have had negative unemployment in the IT industry for a few years.

American college graduates don’t know squat about developing and maintaining software. They know only theory and they have a gimme-dat attitude. They sit around updating their FB status and sending out Tweets instead of working.

In today’s fast paced world of IT, we need developers who know what they are doing, can deliver when asked, and who WANT to work. In my experience, Texas companies are resorting to HB1 visa applicants to get the jobs done on time and under budget.

Proven experience (regardless of citizenship) trumps inexperienced, snot-nosed, gimme-dat brat all day long. If we want to reduce the number of foreign workers taking American jobs, we need to produce American graduates with a work ethic and establish interships that provide real-world experience. JMHO.

I imagine that has had an impact on his position, but I couldn’t say for sure.

To my knowledge he is a proponent for, and has supported legislation to increase the # of H1B visas by a large (hundreds) %. Perhaps someone else can provide the accurate info.
