A Russian air force jet has been shot down by Turkish forces after it strayed into the country's airspace, according to unconfirmed reports. Eyewitnesses reported a large explosion in Huraytan, northern Syria, as three fighter jets were sighted flying overhead, the Express said.
A Turkish-based journalist tweeted that three Turkish planes were responding after radar locked on to some "mysterious" MiG-29 jets, which are a similiar model to those used by Russian forces.
The news comes after Turkey scrambled F-16 fighter jets last weekend after a Russian MiG-29 crossed into Turkish territory near the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province, close to the border with Syria. Turkish jets then escorted the Russian aircraft back into Syrian airspace.

Wut? Why is ‘shot down’ in scare quotes?
Wasn’t this story run around the horn about 24 hours ago?
The press uses quotation marks when they’re quoting something that’s not yet confirmed.
I’ve not been following how long the story has been run around the horn. With Putin’s violations of Turkey’s airspace, which even his propagandists have confirmed, this could very well be true. Turkey has threatened to shoot them down. Today’s pilot’s do not violate airspace by accident. It’s a heavy handed threat that Putin has used against at least six countries in Europe, even neutral Ireland and neutral Sweden. So the fact that the bully Putin is doing these types of aggressive threats to Turkey is in keeping with the character of his regime. He’s a bully boy who has waged an undeclared and “covert” war against a peaceful neighbor.
“Wut? Why is shot down in scare quotes?”
You have to realize reporters are appallingly ignorant of all things that go bang. The author was probably certain that the words, “white male” and “assault weapon” should feature in the title along with “loner” and “racist.” But he couldn’t figure out how to do it. He used scare quotes as a dog whistle so knowledgeable readers could fill in the missing words where necessary.
This story came out yesterday and was never picked up by the msm. Don’t know if it really happened or not.
Pilots.
Another one? This makes like 5-6 according to as yet unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.
There is a history of Russo-Turkish warfare. The Tsars coveted the Bosporous. So did the Soviets. I imagine Putin does, also. Right now would be a fine time to attack Turkiye. There is no Great Power available to protect it. It would not be so easy as the Crimea, though.
I’d like to see the Russians take back the Hagia Sophia. The problem is that Turkey is now 99% Mohammedan. I wouldn’t mind seeing them take back the northeast corner and driving the Mohammedans back.
it’s the most important fake story of the past 36 hours :)
i expect to see it on here in, oh, another 8 hours when i check later :)
Allowing the Russians to occupy Istanbul is giving the Russians control of the Eastern Mediterranean and of the Middle East. Russia would be much harder to deal with if/when we have a government that feels a need to deal with Russia or to have some influence in the ME. If the Russians get Istanbul they will set their eyes covetously on Suez and who is going to stop them at that point?. Things will move very fast now, as the Russians and others judge the possibility that the window of opportunity- i.e. Democrats in Washington- will close in a 14 months or so.
I’m waiting for either Dan Rather or Brian Williams to weigh in on this.

Aha. Thanks.
So, ‘shot down’ could be a dog whisthe for I spilled my Stoli.
In the long term I’d rather have the Russians occupying Constantinople than the Mohammedans, and even in the short term.
Anyway, I don’t see it happening. It would isolate Russia internationally, and all of the jihadis would vent their wrath on Russia.
Not buying it.
A Turk shooting down a Russian pilot?
Just not buying it.
I don’t think Russia is terribly worried about isolation. It will have tremendous amounts of cheap oil and control of the outlet from the Black Sea. Russia has tried to get the Dardanelles and the Bosporus before, several times. Turkiye is, however, not a pushover or has not been in the past. Historically As the Ottoman Empire was weak the French and British informally moved in on Istanbul to prevent Russian takeover. I am not sure how that would work now. The USA has done those things that France and England used to do since WWII and I dont; think the present resident of the WH would countenance that kind of intervention.. He is more apt to pull the 6th Fleet out of the Mediterranean altogether and cede Istanbul and by implication Suez to Russia.
