DISCOVERING GOD
Tomorrow, many will enjoy a day off to celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus Day is a legal holiday that we, as North Americans along with Latin Americans, celebrate the landing of Columbus in the Bahamas in 1492. Because of this discovery, a country, the United States of America, would come into existence based upon a pursuit of God Jehovah and the right to worship as we please.
Admiral Byrd, the explorer, one day was passing through the lobby of a hotel when a large company of people commenced cheering him. Two men were joining in the salutation, when one was overheard remarking to the other: "He is the last of the explorers; there is nothing left for the rest of us to explore". Little did they realize that as we face a new millennium we would be standing on the edge of discovering new worlds and the world in which we live. The same can be said of God. We might think we know the story and everything there is in our relationship with the Creator of all that is to be discovered, but spiritually, we have just begun to see and know what God can be and do in our lives. It all tends to come into focus when you are standing on the top of the Rocky Mountains at night looking out into space at the stars that are as numerous as the sands of the sea...or on the bow of a ship, when the moon is cutting a path before you in the blackened waters of an endless ocean. You begin to understand how little we know about the mysteries of God when you hold a newborn child as the morning sun's rays break through your window, bathing you in the newness of a new day. As the Queen of Sheba said of Solomon's Kingdom, "But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me....". We only know in part. So, let us propose to discover, see for ourselves, and know more of the God that lives within us and begin to claim His many promises for us. Let us, by faith, sail the old ship of salvation into the horizon of the Holy Word and find a greater love and knowledge of our God and Messiah. Remember, "...we are all in the same boat with Christopher Columbus. He didn't know where he was going when he started. When he got there he didn't where he was, and when he got back he didn't know where he had been". The moral of the story being, "Just do it". God will bless you in your spiritual journey and you will always find Him there. CAPT Jerry McNabb, CHC, USN
