In unmistakable ways over the last two weeks, whether he has intended to or not, Donald J. Trump has started to articulate a way out of the presidential race: a verbal parachute that makes clear he has contemplated the factors that would cause him to end his bid.
It is a prospect that many in the political establishment have privately predicted as the actual voting grows closer.
In three separate television interviews, Mr. Trump, who has made his standing in the polls a central facet of his campaign message, spoke about what would prompt him to quit a race in which he is currently leading in the polls.
Im not a masochist, Mr. Trump told Chuck Todd, the host of Meet the Press on NBC News, last weekend. If I were doing poorly, if I saw myself going down, if you would stop calling me because you no longer have any interest in Trump because he has no chance, Id go back to my business.
It was similar to what he said in an interview with the Today show a few days earlier, and at another point to 60 Minutes on CBS.
In interviews this week, Mr. Trump insisted he was in the race to win, and took aim at troublemakers in the media who, he said, are misrepresenting his remarks. Im never getting out, he insisted Friday on MSNBC.
Mr. Trump keeps noting that he still leads in every major Republican poll and is in a political position that others would envy, and he says he will spend the money to keep his candidacy alive. But he conceded ...

Let them keep having their wet dreams about Donald backing out of the race! That’s all they have are their dreams!
because reporters keep asking him about it.
Indeed. I've seen a lot of presidential races and I've never seen one where the media up and down the line insisted on the front runner getting out. What kind of lunacy is this.
I've only seen an occasional tepid essay about maybe Bush should get out, now that he's fallen down to the 4% range. But the hammering on Trump is like nothing Ive ever witnessed.
He's unqualified, he's a rapist, he's a racist, he's a fascist, he's been married three times, he's too rich, he's not as rich as he says, he hates women, he hates Mexicans. You'd think the guy was the reincarnation of Pol Pot. It only tells me he is the biggest threat to the elites of this country and they are terrified of him becoming president. Good. I want them terrified.
Its the Obama way. Eliminate your opponent before he has a chance to beat you, just like he did in Illinois.

The turds in the press sure are reading a lot into that statement, which isn’t there.
Maggie, you 50 IQ commie whore, nobody reads the NYT, except your momma and the devil.
Brilliant analysis. Thanks very much. Yes, I don’t know where the Cruz remark comes in, the way it was put, and rather hard to believe it was innocuous, but who knows. A drip in the ocean.
When you have time, and only if you are so inclined, I would like a paragraph on the usual course of the campaign calendar, but only for between now and February 1st, (the month of first votes cast). Your opinion on the horse race, the drop out rate, the final four and when they emerge? Think about it.
I think Trump and Cruz are the only two right now who are each visibly turning their respective corners. There is another gear it seems to me. I want analysis! LOL!!
