Having Talked to several senior aides on Capitol Hill (along with Chris Stirewalt and his sources on the Hill tied to the leadership) here is the picture that is beginning to form.
Speaker John Boehner has agreed to stay on as Speaker--not just until the Caucus nominates someone --but, until that person can confirm 218 votes on the House floor (needed to take the Speaker’s gavel). Short of that – Boehner will stay on for the rest of this Congress and steer legislation that is pending.

My ‘cynicism, conspiracy theory, suspicious mind’ says that was the plan all along.
Boner announces he is resigning (while wiping away a tear), his ‘hand picked’ successor says something utterly STUPID and even if he meant it, it shouldn’t be repeated.
Like a ‘White Pol’ going to a ‘black lives matter’ rally and continually use the word ‘niggardly’ rather than say ‘cheap SOB’.

Anyway, ‘hand picked successor’ drops out, SHTF and boner graciously offers to stick around for the healing process.

So, the plan was that Boehner would quit, McCarthy would take his place and perform the same.
However, McCarthy couldn’t face the music (about the adultery) so, he quit.
So, it’s back to Boehner.

Interesting choice of words there. They really don't adequately express what Boehner is doing-"desperately refuses to leave" would be more accurate.
