Officials: Pentagon weighs protections for US-trained rebels

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Russia's launch of airstrikes in Syria is prompting discussions within the Pentagon about whether the U.S. should use military force to protect U.S.-trained and equipped Syrian rebels if they come under fire by the Russians."

U.S. officials said Thursday that senior military leaders and defense officials are working through the thorny legal and foreign policy issues and are weighing the risks of using force in response to a Russian attack.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter declined to discuss the problem when asked about it this week. But U.S. officials acknowledged that this is one of the questions being asked as they debate the broader dilemma of how the administration should respond to what White House press secretary Josh Earnest described as Russia's "indiscriminate military operations against the Syrian opposition."

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss ongoing deliberations publicly.

In this case they are using the amorphous term "Pentagon" to describe the political appointees of Obama there.

I'm sure no man or woman in uniform thinks it's a good idea to provoke military confrontation with the Russians over 80 terrorists that were trained and supplied by the US.

If we have anybody on the ground there, we need to pull them out asap. Otherwise they will be "Benghazi'd".

The pantswetters who were running around screaming about the imminent start of WW III with Russia in the 1980’s are strangely silent.

Well, boys, that horse is already out of the barn.

The Russians are in Syria and they didn’t attack our planes or troops.

You go attacking them now, and who looks like the bad guy?

Our brilliant politicians and admirals and generals need to speed up their OODA Loop.

Putin is making them look stupid.

Putin calls US support for rebel forces in Syria 'illegal' and says it just arms ISIS

"In my opinion, provision of military support to illegal structures runs counter to the principles of modern international law and the United Nations Charter."

...He said: "It turns out that only 60 of these fighters have been properly trained, and as few as four or five people actually carry weapons. "The rest of them have deserted with the American weapons to join ISIS."

That's because they think it's OK to have a worldwide nuclear war in order to save face for Obama.

Are we really risking a hot war with Russia, to protect Al Quaeda?

The world is upside down.

Just because Putin says it, doesn't make it true.

However, in THIS case it's true.

"Are we really risking a hot war with Russia, to protect Al Quaeda?"

Those are the sentiments of the political appointees, whose first objective is always to make Obama look good.

The problem is that you need sober men of resolve when it comes to war and peace.

But these folks are knee-jerk street fighters who are 100% political. They only care about the personal humiliation of Obama.

U.S. SUSPENDS FAILED $500M PROGRAM TO TRAIN SYRIAN REBELS

...The program was beginning to draw bitter opposition from Democrats ....who said this week’s revelations about the second wave handing its gear to al-Qaeda was “just the latest indictment of a program that was destined to fail at the start

...The first wave of “New Syrian Force” fighters was ambushed by al-Qaeda and wiped out, with many of them killed, kidnapped, or MIA.

No one at the Pentagon seems to know what happened to the second wave after they handed American vehicles and ammunition over to al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front in exchange for safe passage.

"“Guess how many Syrian rebels we’ve trained to fight ISIS with YOUR $500 million?”

Russia has exposed this lie, to the benefit of the American people (inadvertent, certainly).

We are funding and training "rebels" that seek to topple Assad, Obama's principal objective going back 5 years.

And, contrary to US Law.

POTUS does not have Congressional approval for this objective.

” “It turns out that only 60 of these fighters have been properly trained, and as few as four or five people actually carry weapons. “

The answer is simple bring these guys and their families to America and let them live in the outhouse, Kerry’s and Clintoon’s homes.

Give them a million $’s and Obama care and put them on liberal talk shows to evoke phony care for them.

What will Obama do when the U.S.-trained and equipped Syrian rebels come under attack from Iranian and maybe Chinese troops?

"maybe Chinese troops"

Do you have a reference for Chinese troops?

I see it bandied about on FR, but never a credible source.

I don't think that's real.

They are terrified that the supposed “Free Syrian Army” will release the details of the covert Sarin Gas/False Flag (Obama’s Red Line) attack from three years ago.

The Sarin came from Libya via Obama rat lines. Former Syrian Generals turned rebel have threatened to reveal the truth on Arab television, if we failed to continue supplying weapons. McCain and Graham shaking in their boots demanding that “WE” do something. No thanks.
