New diesel cars from Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo and other manufacturers have been found to emit substantially higher levels of pollution when tested in more realistic driving conditions, according to new data seen by the Guardian.
Research compiled by Adac, Europes largest motoring organisation, shows that some of the diesel cars it examined released over 10 times more NOx than revealed by existing EU tests, using an alternative standard due to be introduced later this decade.
Adac put the diesel cars through the EUs existing lab-based regulatory test (NEDC) and then compared the results with a second, UN-developed test (WLTC) which, while still lab-based, is longer and is believed to better represent real driving conditions. The WLTC is currently due to be introduced by the EU in 2017.
The biggest polluters according to Adacs own data are:
* Nissans X-Trail 1.6 cDi, which produced over 14 times more NOx in the WLTC test. A Nissan spokeswoman said: We can state unequivocally that we are committed to upholding the law and meeting regulations in all markets. * Renaults Espace Energy dCi 160 emitted over 11 times more NOx in the WLTC test, with Renaults Grand Scenic and Kadjar also among Adacs top 10 polluters. A Renault Group spokesman said: The group complies with all regulations and legislation for the markets in which it operates. Its vehicles are not equipped with defeat devices.

And solar power companies make a lot less profits when tested under realistic market conditions.
Don’t tell me 10 times or 50 times. Tell me a real range number and tell me what the range should be.
Forget about the muslim hordes overflowing your countries, ISIS, Greece and possibly other countries heading for default, the Ukraine...Just MAKE SURE you curb those emissions.
And electric cars do produce pollution.
What kind of hodge podge is this.
“Forget about the muslim hordes overflowing your countries, ISIS, Greece and possibly other countries heading for default, the Ukraine...Just MAKE SURE you curb those emissions.”
Send the EPA after ISIS fighters.... ;-)
Volkswagen is the largest car maker in Europe with $250 billion sales world wide. I would guess they are behind this hodge podge.
My guess is the enviros are behind it as they see an opportunity to impose more draconian and costly emissions compliance testing measures.
That makes sense.
LOL. They could check the emissions on their (our) trucks
I would tend to not trust the UN-developed test.
Well, yes. This is normal. All cars are tested on a closed course under exacting conditions. If it were done any other way there would be too many variables to tell what was going on. Idiot lefty journalists of course are clueless about this and apparently think that this is some sort of revelation.
“Well, yes. This is normal.”
Very normal. Lots of cars theses days do strange things with idle speed and what bot because that is when emission testing is done. There is no chance that VW is the only folks gaming the system. The system is so messed up that I would bet most manufacturers do in one way or another. I know my car has some sort of strange emission control device in it that only kicks in when you have just started it. A few minutes later it turns off.
Thank you!
They also compare to a California (CARB) standard.
I would imagine just about any car anywhere will emit more pollution than found during normal laboratory testing.
