Syrians living in rebel-held areas of Homs province have seen a lot of destruction in four years of war, but say the Russian air force unleashed a whole new level of devastation in air strikes on their towns on Wednesday.
Jets flying at higher altitudes than the Syrian air force emitted no noise to alert the people below to raids reported to have killed at least 33 civilians, including children.
"We have been exposed to a wide range of weapons over the last five years, but what happened today was absolutely the most violent and ferocious, and the most comprehensive in the northern Homs countryside," said a doctor in the town of Rastan, speaking from one of the areas targeted by the jets.
"As I speak to you now the mosque minarets are warning of planes in the sky and warning that gatherings of people should disperse," he told Reuters, declining to be named out of fear for his safety.
He said the 11 people killed in the town, some 12 miles north of the city of Homs, included three children and their father who died along with two visitors when their home was hit. "It was as if the house never was," said the doctor, who helped treat casualties from the attack.
He and others on the ground had no way of knowing for sure the jets were Russian when they struck in the morning. But their altitude, the way they manoeuvred, and later reports that Russia had started air strikes, with Rastan among the targets, left them in little doubt.

Putin’s been getting the Russian armed forces as much practice as possible in advance of taking on the new obamatron military.
White House Promotes A Safe Place To Pee For Transgender Community
No joke.
“Drop your bombs between the minarets....”
This issue was troubling and now it’s handled.
Another WIN for Obama.
Wait till the Russians go in on the ground. They won’t f about, any resistance will be met without hesitation overwhelmingly lethal force.
Oh dear, Newsmax, Reuters and the rest of the lamestream media certainly have received a painful wedgie from the new Crusaders.
A Classic.
....”Putie is ‘showing leadership’while our boy plays golf”.....
While Obama fires talking points, from all criticism, behind the media pundits, gov. appointed lackey’s ....to protect his butt from the fallout.
Are we hearing the “Blame Russia” or what?...Just like before....we can name this tune in one note!
This is a true tragedy in every sense of the word.
It has to be done to get rid of ISIS, but everyday Syrians, who had no problem with the government, the majority, are getting killed along with ISIS because our POS president Aided ISIS and created this crisis every step of the way.
The man should be held responsible for all the carnage he’s caused.
I agree with you guys. Putin is not worried.
Right or wrong, Putie is showing leadership while our boy plays golf.
and spends their time worrying about whether transgendered people "have a safe place to pee."
33 civilian deaths is bad, but apparently ISIS kills more innocent Christians than that practically every day, and in far more horrific ways.
No wonder Obama is upset, Russia is targeting America's real enemy.
Russia’s precision strike ability compares to the USA in the 1980s. They solve the issue with massive firepower and wanton destruction with cheap weapons.
They have arguably a stronger approach in this circumstance.
It doesn’t take a “Nostradamus” to see where this is going. Before this is over, Iran, with Russian and Chinese support, will invade Saudi Arabia and seize the Saudi oil fields.
Couldn't happen to a nicer Kingdom.
Propaganda 101.
Quick, somebody brief Russia on the ROE before too many people get hurt........ /S
“Mass devastation.” I don’t think they know what that phrase means.
My guess is that by the end of the week they will have a better understanding.
