Cruz takes exception to pope on death penalty
Politico ^ | 09/24/15 | Seung Min Kim

In an interview with POLITICO shortly after the pope’s historic address to Congress, the Texas senator said he respects Francis’ views and the Catholic Church’s teachings on the issue, but “as a policy matter, I do not agree.”

“I spent a number of years in law enforcement dealing with some of the worst criminals, child rapists and murderers, people who’ve committed unspeakable acts,” Cruz said. “I believe the death penalty is a recognition of the preciousness of human life, that for the most egregious crimes, the ultimate punishment should apply.”

Cruz also said that whether the death penalty should be in place is an issue that should be left up to each state.

Though Francis touched on several hot-button policy issues during his speech to lawmakers, one of his sharpest messages came on the topic of the death penalty. He called for its “global abolition” and arguing that any punishment should never preclude the chance for rehabilitation.

“I am convinced that this way is the best,” Francis said. “Since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes.”

Ted Cruz, as Solicitor General of the state of Texas, fought and won a landmark ruling for U.S. sovereignty in Medellin v. Texas at the U.S. Supreme Court against 90 foreign nations and the President to ensure the supremacy of U.S. legal system against encroachment by international treaties and rulings of the “World Court.”

Jose Medellin, a Mexican national and an illegal alien, was convicted and sentenced to death for participating in the gang rape and murder of two teenage girls in Houston. Medellin raised a post-conviction challenge arguing that the state had violated his rights under the Vienna Convention, a treaty to which the United States is a party.

This pope is way off the ranch- so glad his visit is almost over. Cruz tells it like it is- some people just need killing.

An execution should be re-named Post Birth Abortion...then it’s perfectly okay.

God is NOT against the Death Penalty since He CHOSE it for His ONLY SON!!! God had Jesus DIE on the CROSS for OUR SINS, not His sins since He is SINLESS!!!

Catholic doctrine is that the death penalty is NOT forbidden. The pope can say whatever he wants but shouldn’t claim to speak for the church.

yes but he never once said “Abortion is murder and a baby dies. God doesn’t agree with abortion.” or words to that effect...

he never once denounced abortion..

his concern for life was limited to murderers on death row... and not a thought for the innocent babies in the womb..

It should be noted that Medellin v. Texas is the precedent being cited by the Michigan and Oklahoma attorney generals to ask other states to impose sanctions of their own against Iran.

A Liberal/Progressive Judge will come along and set a murderer or rapist free to do it all over again.

Free to murder someone whose family member they murdered just because he feels they put him away.

Free to rape the girl again because he feels she should be punished for standing up to him.

When someone says they are against the death penalty, ask them if they are for a murderer murdering again or a rapist raping the same girl over again. Make them think about it.

In the case of Illegal Aliens, THIS IS ALREADY HAPPENING and the above soon to come to a THEATER NEAR YOU.

He did say that life is precious in every stage of it's development and should be protected. He then went on to include his objection to the death penalty.

Ted Cruz isn’t a Catholic. He follows the Bible not the Pope.

but the pro-abortion crowd claim that life doesn’t begin until after the baby is born..that the baby in the womb is not alive yet...

He never included the unborn in his “speech”

he never denounced abortion nor mentioned it..

his speeches were all written out for him and he read them so it wasn’t an accidental oversight ..

The Jesuits appear to be one of the more socialistic branches of Catholicism.

I’m not Catholic but I sure miss Benedict.

Despicable!!!! Downright Despicable no matter Pope or not. HE is WAY off base....
I would denounce him if I were a true Catholic, as much as we in the Evangelical faith would denounce Billy Graham if he veered off course from the fundamentals!!

The visit was incredible and so glad to see the Pope getting the respect he earns. As far as Cruz is concerned, the death penalty is really a waste of time and money. We spend 20 or more years giving these criminals the best legal team, the best medical, the best food (yep I have heard) and lodging and then once the needle is ready to go there are waits after waits until it is done. We have only killed about 1500 people in our country anyway. It seems like a stupid issue to worry about.
