Donald Trump unexpectedly announced Friday that he would skip a major Republican gathering to be held later in the day in South Carolina due to an unidentified “significant business transaction.”

Trump was one of 11 GOP presidential candidates slated to speak at the Heritage Action Presidential Forum at an arena in Greenville. The event is co-sponsored by two of the biggest names in South Carolina GOP politics: Gov. Nikki Haley and former Sen. Jim DeMint.

Trump’s campaign said his undisclosed transaction “was expected to close Thursday” but a delay made him unable to attend. “He sends his regrets,” the campaign said in a statement.

The Heritage Foundation is a huge part of right wing politics. I wonder if why Trump backed out? Was he asked to?

It's still very early in the campaign season, there will be time later for this stuff. For now, Trump's still running a very big business... AND running for president at the same time. What other candidate could manage all that and last a week doing so without collapsing from exhaustion?

It is unfortunate that Trump’s absence will pretty much flush the forum down the country’s collective attention memory hole, and it is also unfortunately this will happen on a forum where Cruz would have the opportunity to get from under Tha Dahnald’s shadow.

Good thing Bobby Jindal jumps in with a classy remark on the matter...

Thanks for the elaboration.

We have a differing take on Cruz being in Trump’s shadow. Of course, I was not present when these plans were being formulated in months past.

He is getting heat from the whole President is Muslim comment that a participant made at his gathering yesterday. He doesn’t want to be asked questions on that. That is the main reason he is not going. Nice excuse though.

No. He should have done it for Fox News. CNN did a great debate putting Fox News to shame.

As much as most don’t like Kasich - he and Huckabee as well as Cruz are among the few who haven’t trashed Trump.

With nobody watching, who cares.

You believe Donald Trump is the only candidate running who has attracted enough attention to conduct this policy forum which you say no one will watch since DT (or select others) is not present?

Those in attendance will watch. Those watching online and on C-SPAM2 will watch and learn. Perhaps even DT himself.

Others can read later about the events that take place.

In this one case, I do not share your "who cares" sentiment.

Probably. But I think it is to his benefit to attend and get this out of the way. It is the one time that Trump news is not going away....every other time it fizzed out quickly, but this time is hasn’t. Hopefully it will but for some reason this is sticking which is weird since Trump himself didn’t say it.

Yes.......we would have had 2-3 million viewers watching that debate without Trump. The highest debate EVER (before 2015) was in 2008 and was the Obama, Hillary and someone else and they had 8.5 million viewers.

Trump is more concerned with Trump than you are and has his reason(s) to which you and I are not privy.

The replies on Jindal’s Twitter account is very negative towards him. I posted a civil comment as well. I believe Jindal will regret this.

Why assume that there is any secret intent, here?

The man has the resources for this campaign because he has very, very extensive business interests.
