Fiorina did run Hewlett-Packard during a tough time. But even compared to rivals, her tenure was unimpressive.
Carly Fiorina has taken a lot of heat over her business record. But evaluating her performance is more complicated than it seems.
Shares of Hewlett-Packard, the tech giant she ran from 1999 to 2005, fell 45% during her tenure, and she was thrown out as CEO. That doesnt sound great.
During Wednesday evenings Republican debate, she tried to blunt some of that criticism with context. Basically, Fiorina said you have to look at what was going on at the time, and thats a good point. Fiorina took over HP HPQ -3.16% toward the end of the tech bubble, and she only held onto that job for the first few years of the economic downturn. It was a particularly tough time for large computer manufacturers, of which HP was one of the biggest. I led Hewlett-Packard through a very tough time, the worst technology recession in 25 years, says Fiorina.
But even when you compare Fiorinas performance to CEOs who had to navigate the same waters, its hard to defend her track record. At the debate, Fiorina noted that the NASDAQ stock market index, which contains a lot of tech stocks, fell 80% while she was CEO. She said HP had a lot of strong competitors and that some of those went out of business, eliminating all of the jobs at those companies.

So disgusted by anti Trump audience and this “muslim culture” loving dolt getting tons of praise on fox.
No, I didn’t watch fox. I wont and haven’t for five months. Mother told me Carly is being praised non stop on fox.
they want Bush/Fiorina....UGH!!!!!!!!!
Tell Mom to read the online Front Page of the Washington Post has a story that ends Carly
She screwed up HWP and Lucent, and in crony capitalist fashion was then generously rewarded with platinum parachutes, while employees that invested a lifetime and shareholders were screwed.
She believes her gender gives her a leg up that supersedes her incompetence. She believes this thanks to a media controlled country that has been decimated by the Fiorina ilk and the propaganda of the same media.
The establishment and FOX sort of know Bush is never going to get it and now they have moved to the angry woman instead.
Fox is shamelss right now with the Fiorina idol worship. I was just listening to Mark Levin and a trucker called in and said he is for Trump because he will stop the illegals. He said Trump cannot say or do anything to change his mind because he cannot even do his job without feeling in danger from “a lot of bad dudes out there.”
My husband brought up this point long ago. As an IT and network pro, who has been a system admin for years now, he follows this stuff pretty well. Hearing about her running made him quip that she hurt HP and they fired her.
Mom’s 82 and doesn’t know what online means :)
my aunts do so it’s not an age thing. Just not interested. Still listens to songs from the 30s
I set her straight and she’s voting for Trump.
But I AM interested in the article. will go look myself.
I live in Silicon Valley and remember her tenure. She is not thought of kindly! I had friends who she laid off.
I think she was more hated than Steve Jobs.
Meg Whitman was the Republican woman CEO with a very good rep. People of all sorts liked and respected her.
It has the Barbara Boxer's ad in 2010 where all day here has Carly outsourcing 30,000 Jobs buying 7 Jets
Then interviews with the employees that were laid off and had to train their replacements.
Carly is toast
If only we could throw Barry out. Apparently the federal board of directors lack the balls.
Yes, Fox is declaring that everyone declared Carly the winner. But she apparently gave her standard stump speech lines all through the entire debate.
The Establishment Oligarchy is all-out Anybody But Trump mode.
I accidentally flipped to Fox last night and saw that Karl Rove has transformed into Porky Pig. What happened?
ReaganGeneration2 made a good point, I’ve seen her several times, she always sounds like a well rehearsed politician.
In a couple of cases, 2 different TV spots making comments about the Iran deal, it sounded like the exact same thing, almost word for word. That’s been my impression of everything I’ve heard her say, sounds too well rehearsed.
As I said in another thread, her fake smile makes her look like a predator. Last night she looked mad all night. Like someone else said she reminded me of a pissed off ex wife.
