Marmaduke’s Brad Anderson dead at 91
Dunkirk Observer Today ^ | 9/8/2015 | Greg Fox

PORTLAND - Nationally recognized cartoonist Brad Anderson - who called the town of Portland his home for a good portion of his life - has sadly drawn his loveable and exuberant Great Dane for the last time.

Anderson died unexpectedly on Aug. 30 at the age of 91, according to a Saturday statement on the National Cartoonists Society's website. He is best known for creating the enduring comic strip "Marmaduke," which is syndicated by Universal Uclick in over 500 newspapers in 10 countries, including the OBSERVER.

"He really liked to talk to people and his heart was here in the town of Portland and (the village of) Brocton," Portland Supervisor Dan Schrantz said. "He was another success story of someone who got their start growing up in a small, rural community ... and becoming a successful person and contributing his talents to society. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will definitely be missed by everyone, but he is well-remembered in the Brocton-Portland area."

Heck I still Miss Henry Snuffy Smith and Sluggo

But the best Comic ever done EVER is Calvin and Hobbes.

Why Watterson retired is beyond me

“Black Lab here.”

Always have rescue dogs here. Labs have such a good (deserved) reputation that they don’t have to go begging for adoption. Wonderful companions.

My mother was all set to buy a glass patio table until she saw a Marmaduke cartoon with the guy eating a steak and the dog salivating underneath the table. The caption read something like:

“Honey, get a a tablecloth!!”

We could easily visualize our German Shepard doing the same thing.

The Peanuts drawings all became jagged when Charles Schultz’s health declined and tremors set in. It was a sad thing to see happening, but I’m glad he stuck with it as long as could.

Been there, expecting a family member to die, yet it was still unexpected. You never want to face until it happens, and it is still unexpected.

I was shocked when he gave it up.
He had such momentum going with Calvin and Hobbes.
They are classic!

Seeing the characters change because of his weakened body just made them more endearing. I still read Peanuts every day! :)
They’re still as fresh as if he DID draw them the night before!

I always liked Marmaduke.

I guess I assumed Brad Anderson looked like the owner, the middle aged guy with the moustache.

He didn't.

I had no clue he was that old.

They were in 1968 recently, for Snoopy was thinking of competing at Grenoble. Almost 50 years old, but it doesn’t feel like a relic at all.
