Lewiston, indeed, was better. The small town in Maine with a population of 30,000 provided welfare to anyone in need, with the state picking up half the tab. Recipients, including the Muslim refugees, were allowed a generous five years of assistance before their benefits became terminated, and extensions for several additional years on the public dole were not difficult to obtain. Single parents could stay on welfare and go to college.
Public housing was also available, although, with the influx of Somalis, the housing projects became packed to capacity. Many of the new project dwellers were single Somali mothers with large broods of children. Those who are unable to obtain public housing were handed Section 8 vouchers, which the federal government provided to subsidize their rent in private apartments.
The newcomers have shown scant interest in securing employment. When Renee Bernier, the president of the Lewiston city council, offered to hire 30 Somalis at the rate of $8 to $10 an hour to hold warning signs at construction sites, few displayed interest. The handful, who did apply, said that they were only willing to work between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Somali population of Lewiston now exceeds 40,000.

In some ways it’s like occupied territory, customs from the old country valued very very highly.

There has been a social component something like oil and water, but it hasn’t been all bad.
It’s just disconcerting to see U. S. food cuisine and night life be unable to remain in your town, because there is very little traditional U. S. type populace left to support them.

This is the problem in a nutshell. If these immigrants - any legal immigrants really - came here and wanted to be Americans things would be fine. If they want to come here to live IN America but with the attitudes and customs that turned their former countries into crapholes, it will never work. Well, if the goal is “balkanize America” then it will work. Because that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
Cut welfare benefits and give them a bus ticket to CA. The weather is better there.
The neighbors next door on one side are from Lebanon, the other side they are from Laos. Not a car I saw pulling in or out had a person who looked to have been born and bred here.

Governor Paul LePage of Maine, a conservative, has already cut welfare and made many individuals, including the white population, get a job.
He also ended Maine’s status as a sanctuary state in January 2011, two days after he was sworn in.
Immigration was not the problem it is today before the welfare state. People who came here to work to make their lives better were valuable additions to America. They had a stake in the system and prison wasn’t a viable alternative. In fact, that’s exactly what all of our ancestors did.
But thanks to LBJ and his “Great Society,” we’ve become the the world magnet for every third world sponger and parasite, who will surely sooner or later turn America into the 3rd world hell-hole they ran away from.
