The mistaken airstrike by the Egyptian military that killed a dozen people on a Mexican tourist trip in the Western Desert hit at a picnic in the middle of the day, witnesses said Monday, raising new questions about both the extent of the error and the official explanations.
The convoy of four sport utility vehicles was about three hours southwest of Cairo on a typical tourist trip through the unearthly chalk rocks of the White Desert at around midday on Sunday when a diabetic passenger complained that she needed to eat, according to a tour-guide official, witnesses and others briefed on the events.

It was then that the helicopter opened fire, killing at least a dozen people including at least two visiting Mexicans while wounding a tourist policeman and at least 10 others.
Does someone actually pay for analysis as insightful as this? Who knew that having a government use helicopter gunships against tourists on a picnic would be detrimental to tourism?
Egypt obviously has pretty strict ideas about Mexican immigrants. I just want a decent fence.
Back in 1997, a tour-bus and site in Egypt got attacked...62 people dead by the end. They had a long talk afterwards, and they put all kinds of guards, and protective measures into place. Anyone who goes there....may be thrilled at the historical stuff, but there’s tons of action going on in the background and you’d be questioning your safety and security.....minute-by-minute.
Terrible incident and it seems some head should roll for it.
Something sure spooked the crew that did this.
As for an impact on tourism, I doubt this is likely to happen again, and plenty of tourism will continue.
This was a terrible incident, but the likelihood of it happening to another group of tourists is very low.
I’m wondering if this helicopter snapped and went Jihad on these infidels.
Something seems strange. I doubt it could have looked much like a terrorist group out there. Of course this is all speculation. Who knows what sort of briefing they had heard, what they might have been expecting?
Mexicans go to Egypt for a vacation...?
Maybe they got lost on their way to Arizona. Same terrain.
It does seem strange, pulling a mile off the road if the passenger needed to eat right away?
*Note also*
Slimes is one of Obama’s boot-licking lackeys, and Obama is pissed at Egypt for cracking down on his Muslim B-hood buddies ... don’t know if that’s a factor here, but it needs saying ...
Mexicans go to Egypt? Or, was it a Mexican tour company, of sorts. And, since the Egyptians were on a patrol specifically looking for a muslim brotherhood/ISIS outfit in the same area... maybe this is what they got— a “cover” tour group, that really wasn’t.
The original posting quoted the Tourist minister, saying they had not registered or licensed the tour plans, nor were the vehicles tagged with license plates.
Just saying. Since an ISIS unit is CONFIRMED to be in Mexico near our own TX border— remember?
A mile off the road does seem strange. Was there a spot there the tourist folks used to frequent? I wonder.
Yes, if there’s any water to be carried, the NYTs would be there to the rescue. No doubt...
They probably thought it was safer than the Arizona desert...
Something's not sounding right.
I will be interested to hear the rest of the story on this.
Like you, something seems askew here to me. It just doesn’t pass the sniff test.
It must have been the black table cloth!
Maybe it was an oasis.
