A Pennsylvania barber shop has been fined after refusing to cut a woman’s hair.
Barbiere in Washington, Pennsylvania, is described as “a high end Gentleman’s Barber Shop.”
On March 11, a woman, Diamond Pecjak of Crucible, walked into the shop after booking an appointment online for herself and her boyfriend, according to the Observer-Reporter Newspaper.
After being told no, Pecjak filed a complaint with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs against the shop.
The shop was fined $750 over the incident.
Barbiere’s owner, John Interval, said he didn’t know he was compelled to service both genders and doesn’t expect an upswing in female customers anytime soon.
"I didn't really consider it so much a discrimination thing as it's a barbershop, you know," Interval said.
Interval said he will not formally contest the fine, but he disagrees with the penalty.
“It’s infringing on our environment. Guys come here as a kind of a little getaway, to be around other guys,” said Interval, while clipping a customer’s beard as Frank Sinatra tunes played on the stereo. “My hands are tied. They are forcing me to do this and telling me how to do my business.”
He said the shop recommended salons and even offered to pay for Pecjak’s haircut elsewhere to compensate for the inconvenience.
Nearly 100 supporters of Barbiere signed a petition in opposition of the board’s ruling.
Pecjak, a cosmetologist, wanted a fade, a trendy men’s haircut. She declined to comment on her complaint, on her attorney’s advice.
Why didn’t he just give her a bad haircut. She’d never come back. Same thing with the bakery people. Just make a horrendously bad cake. let them eat “bad” cake!!
I had heard this reported in the last 24 hours as a woman demanding female-type hairstyling for which the shop did not even possess the equipment.
The last line of this story changes EVERYTHING.
She wanted a MAN’S haircut. Since the establishment does MEN’S haircuts, their refusal to cut her hair WAS unjustified.
If she had just said he was identifying as male that day, everything would have been perfectly fine.
Yeah, let’s get the government after any one who is male or white or both who does any thing others do everyday with impunity.

It doesn’t change a damned thing. Stop the whining! What part of “we reserve the right to refuse service,” is the problem? If I drop my wife off at a women’s gym, I don’t expect I’ll be able to work out there. Business operations should not be decided by a spiteful person’s tantrums!
Ask them to leave the premises nicely, and then throw the pansies out on their ear. Free association means not associating as well. To hell with liberalism!
Unjustified, but IT SHOULDN’T BE AGAINST THE LAW.
That horse has already left the barn—when the Civil Rights movement went beyond getting rid of Jim Crow laws, which mandated discrimination and segregation, and insisted on prohibiting freedom of association on private property.
I get that, but what will he do if another woman comes in. Will he pay 750.00 for each woman not served?

she's a lefty troublemaker, pure and simple. Anytime someone would rather get an establishment in trouble rather than go somewhere else for service, they're there simply to cause trouble to the establishment.
Just like the gay cake story. They were there just to stir up trouble, not to get a cake. They could have gotten it anywhere but that wasn't the narrative. They were after their crusade.
You are right. It seems if it had just been about gas stations, diners & motels and the like, that wold be fair. When it comes to cakes and haircuts, it is tyrannical foolishness.
Just like if some dude walks into a beauty parlor and wants a Brazilian wax.

Oh, and have fun working out at curves.
Because it would look like deliberate sabotage and they would be fined accordingly.
The solution here is to a cut that would be offered a man. No shampoos, no conditioners. Over the ears and short on back.
If they don’t want a cut according to how you can cut it, that’s ok.

That should be the strategy, people need to get creative when dealing with ridiculous people.
That’s the solution for me...bad hair and bad cakes.
