Ten major car manufacturers have committed to making automatic emergency braking a standard feature on all new vehicles.
The announcement was made by administrator Mark Rosekind of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the dedication of a new expanded testing facility at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Ruckersville, Virginia.
Roskekind called it "a new era in safety technology."
The 10 companies are Audi, BMW, Ford, GM, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Tesla, Volkswagen, Toyota and Volvo.

How do I turn it off?
Do.
Not.
Want.
Should be no different than current, you need to maintain “assured clear distance” as they called it in driver training.
This will not end well.
Hopefully by pulling a fuse. Its how I deal with my ABS.
What could possibly go wrong?
Sweet! The new automatic carjacking feature is going work just wonderfully for carjackers!
They’ll cut in front of you on the road, slam on the brakes, automatically stop your car, kill you, and then take your car!
So if you want to rob someone just step in front of their car.
Another ‘feature’ that will probably be vulnerable to hacking and a danger to everyone on the road.
But if it saves one child’s life...
No more pushing/towing cars stuck in the snow. You’ll have to call the tow truck or leave it until spring.
This dovetails nicely with the reports of the guy who figured out he could activate the automatic braking on remote vehicles with (IIRC) a laser pointer and a arduino.
Beyond the vandal implications this could have serious terrorist possibilities. Simple device on the side of a major interstate at rush hour before a holiday weekend triggered by a cell phone. Would only take a small percentage of cars to suddenly lock up their brakes and traffic would be backed up for miles. Could effectively shut down a major city either as the action itself, or as a prelude to trap everyone downtown prior to a larger event.
Pull fuses. Cut wires. Ignore lights.
One more step to self driving cars.
Sometimes the way to avoid an accident is to speed up and get around the hazard.
Wow.
How about we make hitting a vehicle a little more expensive that it is now?? Obviously it isn’t expensive enough as people do it all too often.
Maybe hit a car, lose the license for 1 year?? Maybe allow insurance companies to double your premiums?? Maybe jail someone for two accidents in 5 years?? How about we enforce the distracted driving laws??
So what do you do currently when someone does that, tap them in the rear bumper like Earnhardt and watch them spin into the median?
“automatic emergency braking!?”
what could possibly go wrong?
Certainly steering around the hazard, when possible is a better idea than just putting on the brakes. And you will probably need to punch it a little to get clear.
