Two things at play: Nature abhors a vacuum, and If you summarily discard all else as "evil" and are told that from the womb, what is left becomes good in your eyes even if it runs contrary to your nature, viscerally.

The latter is the reason the Taliban, ISIS, etc. obliterate the signs and symbols (and history) of any civilizations which they have overrun.

On a non-political website I’ve not an Englishman insisting that the 9/11 terrorists were not Muslims. The stupid, it hurts. We’ll see what he says about Boko Haram, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah, ISIS, Indonesian jihadists, the Sudanese government, Somali warlords, Wahabbis, the Iranian theocracy, Algerian terrorists, and on and on.
