The Rawlings-Blake administration plans to pay Freddie Gray's family $6.4 million as a settlement for civil claims in his arrest and death an extraordinary payment in a lawsuit against city police.
The settlement which is expected to be approved at Wednesday's meeting of the city's spending panel will be paid out over two years, according to the mayor's office. The five-member board is controlled by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
The payment is larger than the total of more than 120 other lawsuits brought against the police department for alleged brutality and misconduct since 2011.
Gray, 25, died in April after sustaining a severe spinal cord injury in police custody. In the hours after his funeral, the city erupted into rioting, arson and looting. The National Guard was called in to help restore order, and a citywide curfew was put in place.

How nice for the taxpayers of Baltimore.
He must have been a very high income earner to merit such a large settlement.
.
Hey - it is only taxpayer money to pay off the family of thug before any of the criminal trial have even begun...
Not that the city is trying to influence those trials...
Given reports his family’s history, I gotta wonder if that cash will be used for anything good any all. And frankly, it could get all members set up for life IF they had good guidance in using it.
Ghetto Lottery Jackpot!
The only question is, how quickly can he do it?
Nice work,Freddie! This was your last”ShakeDown”,but your Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If responsible, I don’t have a problem with some sort of settlement. What I want to know is, how do they know the city is responsible? Nothing has been decided yet.
Heaven Forbid! How could you even think such a thing???
Obviously, the city just admitted guilt regardless. Preposterous.
How much do you think a Baltimore jury would have awarded his family?
What a joke. Up is down. Black is white. And a career criminal who manages to get killed by the police gets his equally worthless family an unprecedented bonus.
and a black Mayor and City council spending tax payers money to the parents, that more than likely aren't even married...
what a sick State Maryland is...and these leaders need to be
FIRED...
STOP BUYING CRIME...
It's a wrongful death suit. He died in police custody. Kind of hard to deny that. A runaway jury could have cost them many times the amount they'll pay.
The Gibsmedat crowd will always get your money one way or another.
Fair point, especially given high octane attorney fees and (likely) more damage to the city during a trial.

Recreational pharmaceutical salesman.
So the police have to make sure you don’t hurt yourself while in their custody. Waiting to hear if one of the lawyers for the cops gets the hospital records - he did live a week after this.
