How stupid could these people possibly be?

A MALE, full grown pit bull...and....not a puppy? I would venture to guess that these very, very, STUPID people were the New Age nurturing type and had no experience with a dog at all. After all, they probably thought they would become popular with the “save the vicious animals” movement in this country.

Play with fire and you will eventually get burned.

Our shelter 50% Chihuahuas, 40% pits, and 10% other. The lone German shepherd and the lone terrier mix for lots of attention

That’s another issue too. They have been bred so much that many of them have issues. It’s getting to be the same with Golden Retrievers, they are over-bred and the puppy mills are breeding pups with their moms. The more that happens the more unstable the animal can become.

Right, nothing in the gene pool. Those Labrador Retrievers are another vicious breed you always read about... Sarcasm off.

While that’s true about the Goldens and other dogs, pits were specifically bred for aggression. Not so with the others.

We use to call them Junk Yard dogs. But that’s insensitive nowadays.

Pit bulls... they're just a bit misunderstood.

I’m referring to a pitbull that has bitten before. It would be a red flag for me.

Just so everyone knows, I am not some Pitbull “Nut”, I’m a dog nut in general. I’ve never owned a Pitbull before, but have known many. All had great owners and were perfect dogs.

Too bad the daughter had to suffer because of her father's stupidity.

A Pit Bull from a puppy maybe, but not my breed of choice.

Even a well trained Pit from a puppy has strong protective instincts such that I'd never trust him/her around non-family.

A rescue Pit Bull, Ah Hell No!

The 2 I knew were raised in the country in a family environment. Wonderful, friendly dogs that snapped periodically and killed other cats/Dogs on occasion that walked too close to them. There was no playing. Also liked to sneak off and chase deer for a few days at a time. Always came back with bruised lips where they must have mauled the deer once they tired. After a couple years of trying my friend finally put both the beast down. Until the day they died, I never turned my back on either one.

Interesting that you should mention German Shepards. Growing up they were plentiful and pitbulls were unheard of.

Maybe the situation can reverse itself.

You wrote: “It all boils down to how they are raised.”

You are correct in most cases but a pit bull has the same temperament as a Siamese cat. You can be petting them and the next thing you know they attack you. With pit bulls it’s much more dangerous due to the size, veracity and general temperament of the dog. They share this trait with the Siamese cats.

I am a dog lover and have always had a dog as my ‘sidekick’ but I only have female dogs...not males. Why? It’s very obvious the difference in temperament between them.

A female dog can be even more vicious than the male if she feels her puppies are threatened or in many cases, if you are threatened simply because she has adopted you as one of her puppies whether you like it or not. On the other hand, a male dog has the temperament to protect his territory and could care less about puppies. It gets much more dangerous when a dog in the area comes into season.

The other thing I have NEVER done is to adopt a dog that was not a tiny puppy. The reason is obvious because once grown they have developed their personality whether good or bad.

The guy who was stupid enough to believe that “the test” the fools in the animal shelter gave the dog proved he was just the mild mannered animal he needed.

Well, when he brought it home he found out just how good the “dog physiological test” was didn’t he...and his daughter won’t forget it either.

Labrador Retrievers are not used for dog fighting and home protection. Do you honestly think that they just breed these pitbulls then throw them in the ring and expect them to attack the other dog? NO! They beat and strangle them. They starve these dogs. They cut them to get their adrenaline flowing. They put fear into these dogs then stick them in with another dog who has gone through the same thing. Go and buy a Labrador Retriever puppy tonight, and start treating it the same way and expect it to lick your face six months from now and not rip it off. An animal is going to act like an animal.

FWIW. Which is probably not much...

Years ago my stepson came home with a dog. Probably 6 mo’s old. Little skinny thing. Some kinda mix. Surely no pit. Cute little thing, really friendly. He wanted to keep it. I said we’d see. He was playing with the dog and kept sticking his face in the dogs face. I told him to stop, he was going to get bitten.

So, I went to work. Got a call. The dog had bitten Bill in the face, right close to the eye. Did a surprising amount of damage for such a small dog. Took several stitches. Wife took the dog to the vet. The vet put him down.

Personally I have seen the exact same thing happen 3 times. Point is, people are stupid. Dogs are just instinctive.

The next day I took my belt and popped my stepson 4 or 5 times pretty good. Had a poor little puppy killed because of his ignorance. Well, you can’t call it ignorance because I had told him what would happen.

Just because a dog has bitten people in the past, doesn’t necessarily make it unadoptable

Yeah, let's not let reality interfere with the futile taming of vicious animals at the expense of our children.
