Liberal PAC CREDO Action is championing a petition pressuring House Speaker John Boehner to return Reagan International Airport to its original name, Washington International Airport. The petition is in response to Boehners outcry against President Obama renaming Mount McKinley to the native Denali.
The petition states: Boehner announced he is deeply disappointed in President Obamas decision. But in 1998, John Boehner and his fellow Republicans in Congress werent so hesitant to remove a presidents name from a public landmark when they decided to rename Washington National Airport after Ronald Reagan.
Boehner has said that he is disappointed with President Obama for removing President McKinleys name from the mountain, mostly because he believes the 19th century president earned the honor through his service to the country in the Civil War.
There is a reason President McKinleys name has served atop the highest peak in North America for more than 100 years, and that is because it is a testament to his great legacy. He made a difference for his constituents and he led this nation to prosperity and victory in the Spanish-American War, Boehner said in his statement.
The bill, passed in 1998 by a Republican majority and signed by President Clinton, was part of a celebration of President Reagans 87th birthday. According to The Washington Post, Michael Reagan, son of President Reagan, spoke before the US House and Senate in support of congressmen passing the bill, in order to win one more for the gipper.
The petition goes on to say that Obamas renaming of the mountain is a small but important step for recognizing the history, culture, and human rights of Americas Native Americans when he decided to rename Americas tallest mountain, Mount McKinley in Alaska, to its original name of Denali.
The PAC, a subsidiary of CREDO Mobile and Sprint Mobile, is well-known for their far-left political lobbying. In 2014, they poured $2.5 million into five Senate races where a Democrat victory was not secured. CREDO has publicly decried the Keystone XL Pipeline and supported gay marriage.
So far, the petition has earned 66,000 signatures, 89% of its goal of 75,000.
Naming things after a slave owner?
I think the trend is against them, but ... Democrats have always been supporters of slavery, so we’ll see if they succeed.
The left would love to name the airport after their hero Che, or maybe Stalin
Harvey Milk? Bradley Manning? Alger Hiss? Che?
I hear McKinley just became available.
Tried to tell folks they were opening Pandora’s Box.
Enjoy...
Barry Sotero International Airport #1. The rest can be renamed later #2, #3, etc.
why don’t we just churn out anotehr exec order?
This is so silly. It’s just an airport. The CITY itself is still named after Washington. LOL
Mckinley was called Denali from before I can remember by Alaskans.. still do..
Way; Before Zero became Marxist in Chief..
Zero didn’t rename anything..
I hope they don’t notice that a highway near the airport is named for Jefferson Davis.
Of course, the left already worship Obama, they already have elementary schools named after him, they can create an airport and have it be a shrine to their dear leader
Naming the Washington airport after Reagan was never likely to last long. It should be named after someone the people of DC revere and admire - Malcolm X International Airport.
If they start renaming airports (a few years ago, they wanted to rename O’Hare from being named after a WW2 ace to Harold Washington Airport, they compromised and accepted the international terminal being named after the late Mayor of Chicago. I would suggest that JFK return to its original name, Idlewild; there are a myriad of roads and other public items named after the Kennedys in the weeks after their assassinations, I don’t know of any named after Idlewild.
Unfortunately that did not succeed and it ended up getting named Burbank Bob Hope Airport instead.
Kind of a bummer. Should have been Eddie Van Halen Airport.
It was never called that. This is an error or oversight in editing and proofreading. This is an all too common problem nowadays.
I have no problem with this as long as part of the same legislation they also re-name New York’s big airport back to Idlewild.
(and in my salad days, we always called it “DC National,” not INternational.)
If the mountain won't come to Obama...
