What Kirsten Gillibrand got wrong in NY State Fair speech

Perhaps U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand had Donald Trump's comments about the 14th Amendment and citizenship on her mind when she visited the New York State Fair on Wednesday.

"This Women's Day comes just one week after the 90th anniversary of the 14th Amendment that gave women the right to vote," Gillibrand told a sold-out crowd in the keynote address at the annual Women's Day luncheon.

Of course, Gillibrand, D-N.Y., meant to refer to the 19th Amendment that guaranteed all American women the right to vote.

The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves. Trump suggested last month that he would take away citizenship from children born in the United States if their parents entered the country illegally.

In her speech Wednesday, Gillibrand also said it had been 90 years since the Constitutional amendment gave women the right to vote. But the 19th Amendment was ratified 95 years ago in August 1920.

Nota bene: This was a keynote address, not a gotcha ambush. And she still messed up. Good for her she’s a liberal Democrat.

As Don Imus might say ...

I'm sure she didn't stop by the state fair to make this speech on her way home from a Mensa meeting.

Imagine the media reaction if Obama said there were 57 states while running for president. Or that Obama said he was a Muslim....oh, oops. He said both and the media covered for him just like they will cover for this lightweight Dem.

OH but this is OK, right?

Here's a United States Senator and she doesn't know the Constitution and yet some talking head asks Trump, who is a businessman a political question and he doesn't know?

We have seen these games played by the msm’s and talking heads for centuries, that is how important they think they are....

Wait, folks, just wait....lay back, enjoy reading all the p.c. b. s. from all these people, and come election day we can all sigh a breath of fresh air....

The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves.

BS! It granted citizenship to former slaves, only!

Actually the 14th does grant citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the USA”, section 1..
Read the 13th amendment. 13th ended slavery, the 14th granted “all persons..” citizenship and the 15th granted the right to vote “regardless of color.”

The above is what I learned way back in high school.

It’s been abundantly clear for some time now that our elected representatives don’t know anything about our Constitution. The Constitution is irrelevant to them. It’s just something they swear to uphold. Whatever that means.

You’ve learned the wording correctly. But, the intent, is another story.

My lessons, learned in my Junior year of High School, were less about “intent” but about the “what.” 13th freed the slaves, 14th defined “all persons born or naturalized” as citizens, and the 15th gave the vote to all citizens regardless of race, color or previous condition of servitude.”

We didn't have time to read debates or discussions by the congressmen that eventually voted for or against the amendments or the newspaper articles that were written prior to or after the states ratified them.
