Trump Gets Dinged in Interview for Not Knowing Much About Who’s Who in the Middle East
Slate Magazine ^ | Sept. 3, 2015 | Elliot Hannon

Donald Trump found himself briefly cornered during a call-in radio interview on Thursday. The presidential candidate was a guest on the The Hugh Hewitt Show when conservative host Hugh Hewitt began examining the real estate magnate’s foreign policy chops. Trump seemed to know something was coming, as Hewitt has a nose for generating news (most recently by asking Republican candidates if they would attend a gay wedding), but it was not a flattering exchange for Trump, who confessed to gaping holes in his foreign policy understanding.

Trump managed to emerge only slightly bloodied from the interview and the damage was contained largely thanks to Hewitt’s willingness to move on as Trump grasped for answers or provided patently absurd ones. At one point, Trump assured Hewitt: “I will be so good at the military, your head will spin.”

The back-and-forth began with Hewitt, who will co-moderate the upcoming GOP debate on CNN, asking not just about the Iran deal—but specifically the response of Qassim Suleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards. Hewitt asked if Trump knew who Suleimani was. Trump obviously didn’t, so Hewitt described him as “running the Quds forces.” Trump responded with an unfortunate assessment of the treatment of the Kurds.

This is ALL I need to know to support Trump. Donald Trump is an outstanding manager; no doubt he will get himself education by all the experts in foreign policy, when the need arises.

Gotcha questions detract from the issues at hand, and provide evidence that the person asking the questions is uninformed of the real issues and priorities.

There’s no grand conspiracy here so you really outta relax. Truth is I would never post anything needlessly malicious toward any true conservative. Unfortunately, Trump is no conservative.

Yes he says the right things... sometimes (just recently he praised Canada’s and Scotland’s single payer insurance program and only a few years ago he ripped into Romney for being too ‘mean’ on illegal immigration). The truth is he is paying lip-service only. He is a reflection of you in the mirror, not himself and its no wonder why so many people like them, they see themselves in Trump... but not who he truly is.

Trumps conservative transformation didn’t really come to fruition until 2011, one year after the tea party wave, while deciding if he wanted to run for president. Read the tea leaves here, the guy was a liberal all his life... saw a tea party wave and saw an opportunity that he could possibly ride all the way to the white house.

Illegal immigration is a problem, and yes China is not our friend. But Trump is no mantle bearer for Conservatism, even though he plays one on TV.

Now I won’t apologize for trying to shine a light on this. FR is probably the last bastion of unfiltered, unwatered down conservatism on the net... and thats why its disheartening to me to see so many people here falling for this guy’s whole fabricated facade. In hindsight, yeah this topic probably didn’t need another thread... at least not one by me so soon. And I will be mindful of such things in the future.

Who is your candidate anyways. So I can move them to the bottom of my list of candidates I'd vote for. Even below Jorge Bushe.

And he is going to be able to do anything about it until when? That’s right, when. Right now he is focused on the task at hand. As I see it being the rabbit in a race who is focused on the reasons we need leadership and thus leadership that has the ability to play out the agenda of the office.

Imagine this, his newly appointed JCoS comes into the daily briefing, which I would wager will be the first order of business EVERY day, and briefs the President on this troubling Muslim dickweed in Iran challenging our country. Would you honestly think that it is important what his name is in the big picture? Other than knowing who to pin the target on, no it does not matter.

But, as I regress, I called him a rabbit. Now with all of your capacity on display here, go figure that one out.

I ain’t taken a loyalty pledge, after voting holding my nose for Romney and McLame, I would vote for Trump but not Jebba the Hutt or any of the other Press #1 for English crowd.

I read all over the world they want to invest in fences to keep illegals out. We got to make is so unattractive to stay here they self deport.

Obama proves you don’t have to know what your doing to be President. Trump is better managing than most of the Governors up there on the stage.

He should have asked the all-knowing host what is on page two of Obama’s college transcripts. His answer was a good one though.

There is a ton of assumptions in there. You no more know what's in his heart than I do, yet you think he saw the TEA movement and decided to blah blah blah. It's equally possible he suddenly realized he only has 5-10 good years left and can't take it with him and he might as well do good for his country.

You really don't know what a liberal is at all. You didn't grow up in New York ( like Chicago, DC, LA, SF ) where a liberal really is liberal. By our standards he is nothing of the kind, an outcast to both who knows how to get along with both out of necessity. And this flawed logic of yours, a Conservative purity test clearly hits a brick wall in the general election, because at that point his "flaws" become assets. Do you want to win or lose with a pure Conservative (R) who the majority of the general electorate sheeple despise?

Trump is running a campaign parallel to Reagan which makes sense because of the current President Carter Dinglebarry, and on the same dead economy, and on the same demoralized and neglected military and standing abroad, veterans, plus a new Conservative issue - the Illegal Alien Invasion. These issues are Jobs/Taxes, Trade, Military, Aliens. All the strawmen you bring up are boutique issues that matter not to a President of any ideology because they will not cross his desk. They matter as much as his favorite food or baseball team.

You say you are not a troll yet you are running the Alinsky playbook at every opportunity. Specifically his directive to 'hold the enemy to his own high standards which he can never live up to'. That does not work on me because there is *no* Conservative as Conservative as I am. What you are really doing is simply pointing out that no-one measures up, unfortunately that leaves only the option of the lesser of 16 evils in the primary. It also means losing in the general. The strangest thing is that you argue as if there hasn't already been two terms of Dinglebarry and as if Trump is a danger who might sign into law Socialized Medicine, Homo Marriage, Military Cuts, Higher Taxes, and hand the world to ISIS.

This time around is possibly the last relatively fair election because the establishment fully intends to naturalize millions more (D)ummycrat voters, and only one person has singlehandedly put a temporary stop to it. You know who that is. Only one is specifically touching, jumping on, and literally doing a jig on the third rails of politics without fear. You know who that is. Only one is demonstrating a willingness to give the finger to the major media and their sneaky politically correct methods of leading politicians around by the nose. You know who that is. Someone will need to ride herd on the pathetic Congress who have acted worse than the Reid-Pelosi class, and that someone must have leadership skill and the ability to intimidate. I think you know which of the 16 that is.

Everything you are doing here is about ensuring the same insane outcome of all the previous elections, and you are doing it while standing in a hurricane of populist discontent, the most powerful force in politics. If he goes all the way through he will be the best positioned President to accomplish those few things he is running on than anyone before him. Only Reagan and FDR come to mind as to existing in similar circumstances. However FDR got nothing positive accomplished for 8 years until World War II saved him, and Reagan had a Communist Congress to deal with and if he had not been shot and survived triumphantly, they would probably have blocked his accomplishments in year one.

Something historic is happening here. It's reminiscent of the French Revolution just without the guillotines, so far. Feel free to stand in its path though.

You've heard FReepers tell you and some of your allies that they want to know who "your guy" is so they can vote against him. What does this tell you about your effectiveness? If you get even one person to vote *against* your guy have you not failed?

P.S. Exactly what does your nick "z taxman" supposed to signify? Just wondering.

Why all those “gottcha” type questions? They serve no purpose other than to make the person appear illiterate.

I’ll wager Trump doesn’t know the name of the guy who changes the oil on my vehicle either.

There is a hell of a difference between a college professor and an actual manager of a business.

One only has theories learned from others who only have theories while the business manager has actual experience in making things happen and producing something more than wasted paper and hot air.

We have a “college professor” as today’s President and you can clearly see what a disaster that has become when it comes to foreign policy. However, has anyone heard a discouraging word about him?

Now, we have a private individual running for office that clearly shows he can actually accomplish things through the management of the personnel in his business. He does not have to know how to fix the toilet or do brain surgery for his business is the MANAGEMENT of whatever he controls.

Knowledge of foreign policy is good to have but management of foreign policy experts and reliance upon their opinions and experience in that matter is of the most importance.

These foreign policy wonks in today’s administration consist of none other that “the bitch” and her minions that were in the Secretary of State’s office. However, liberals think that while she was there we had one of the greatest professors of foreign polity ever.

Up is down, Down is up!

I’ve read the books on Hugh’s list and am a news junkie, but never felt compelled to memorize who’s who in the terrorist club.

It’s simply not necessary to execute foreign policy effectively.

That doesn’t excuse Trump’s inability to articulate his foreign policy, beyond, “I’ll hire smart people and do the right thing.”
