Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in November 1999 that, if elected president, he wanted to make Charles Rangel, the Democratic Congressman from New York, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
At the time, real estate magnate was considering running for president as a member of the Reform Party. Asked by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer if hed given some thought to a potential Trump Cabinet, Trump mentioned Rangel as his top choice to lead HUD.
Well, lets go like HUD, Trump said. I think Charlie Rangel is a terrific guy. Hes a congressman from New York. He has been a powerful guy. Now the Democrats are not in power, but I think hed be terrific at HUD.
Rangel has been a member of the House since 1971 and is still in office. His website touts his record promoting affordable housing in New Yorks 13th Congressional District.
Other Trump Cabinet picks would have included Colin Powell as secretary of state and General Electric CEO Jack Welch as treasury secretary. Trump said that John McCain would be a very interesting candidate for secretary of defense.
In the interview, Trump also predicted that, if he won the Reform Partys nomination, he would take more votes away from the Democrats than the Republicans in the general election. He ended up withdrawing from the race in February 2000.
“I believe people can change.”
You mean like right after they are elected they “grow” in the job and once again change their position?
For me, Cruz is the best. I vote pro-life so I may have to write someone in on election day.
Yeah! I’m not a fan of trump! Even in the eighties and nineties when I was Democrat he was heavy into casinos and he went bankrupt on some deals. I never vote for expanded gambling here and never sign petitions to put gambling on the ballot. On the other hand I’m tired of dynasties in Washington. Go back to state legislators picking senators and and term limits on representatives.
Yes, he brags about how he was buying politicians, to get favorable treatment from the government, moving money from our (the taxpayers) pockets to his own through corruption and bribery.
Now people tell me he's the only guy who can clean up the system. Reminds me of the Democrats putting Barney Frank in charge of Fannie Mae reform.
What's wrong with posting articles detailing Donald Trump's true political history and "evolution"
I grant you this article is not current and may have been posted previously, but what is about you Trumpkins that you can't stand to see the facts that Trump has no conservative underpinnings, is not grounded in conservative ideology and has said/says the kind of stuff you would never forgive from another candidate?
Every current article that provides more critical information about Trump is as useful as articles detailing the problems that other candidates have.
I’m not convinced Trump isn’t for amnesty either. He’s said repeatedly, when asked about his deportation plans, specifically about deporting whole families that he’d deport them all but then “let the good ones back in”. He’s used that phrase repeatedly. If you don’t think that’s amnesty you’re deluding yourself.
At least he’s actively talking about deportation I’ll give him that. But I don’t think any candidate is strongly against all forms of amnesty (even though they all shy away from that word).
Party loyalty is so passe . The party is not loyal to us now is it? Open borders, influx of muzzie scum, Obama care still damaging health care. Not to mention another crappy trade deal..and on ...and on...
These one-worlders never quit.....never.
The $18 Trillion in US debt was not caused by Trump. The unfinished middle eastern wars (that the USA lost) were also not caused by Trump. ISIS was not caused by Trump. Iran getting nuclear technology was not caused by Trump. The immigration problem was not caused by Trump.
These problems are largely the GOP’s fault.
And I fully expect them to do anything to destroy him--like producing pictures of a teenaged Trump in Dealey Plaza, Nov. 1963, wth something under his arm that looks like curtain rods...
And if that wasn’t “damning” enough to the Trump campaign....
Im thinking that this Breaking News yesterday about Trumps close connection with, and Donations to, Al Sharpton and his racist organization, took the wind out of Trumps sail. Read the FR thread linked below. Many of his Conservative supporters are abandoning ship. Close to 400 posts on this thread last night.

I personally despise Rangel but he is better than whomever holds that office now.
I believe Trump will seek competent people now.
Were you singing that tune when Mari Maseng Will worked for Michelle Bachmann?
I have no clue who did or didn’t work for Michelle Bachmann’s campaign - I didn’t support her candidacy. So, tell us - are you George Will’s wife? I’m beginning to think so.
Some choice.
I am sure there will be a third or fourth party candidate who has done neither, and who will get my vote if those are the options.
Well, you’re wrong. As usual.
Doesn’t matter - I’ll believe what I want. You are George Will’s wife - if you want to keep bashing Trump - then I’ll bash you.
Guess I am, because I don't trust politician's campaign rhetoric!
Trump has very little in the way of political history. As a business magnate he is obliged to play on everyone’s corner. As a leader of government all bets are off.
Trump’s candidacy raises an important question about leadership in this country. Some of the most effective leaders have never been elected to office. They have run massive businesses and NPOs. The exception is military leaders. These, however, have mostly been bureaucrats.
Teddy R. is a good comparison with Trump. Both are bombastic and enormously effective.
You characterize my stating facts as “Bashing Trump.”
Then why not tell me (and the board) what his correct history is?
