Donald Trump Wanted To Make Charlie Rangel HUD Secretary In 1999
Buzz Feed ^ | July 10, 2015 | Christopher Massie

Posted on 09/03/2015 2:06:56 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in November 1999 that, if elected president, he wanted to make Charles Rangel, the Democratic Congressman from New York, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

At the time, real estate magnate was considering running for president as a member of the Reform Party. Asked by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer if he’d “given some thought to a potential Trump Cabinet,” Trump mentioned Rangel as his top choice to lead HUD.

“Well, let’s go — like HUD,” Trump said. “I think Charlie Rangel is a terrific guy. He’s a congressman from New York. He has been a powerful guy. Now the Democrats are not in power, but I think he’d be terrific at HUD.”

Rangel has been a member of the House since 1971 and is still in office. His website touts his record promoting affordable housing in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Other Trump Cabinet picks would have included Colin Powell as secretary of state and General Electric CEO Jack Welch as treasury secretary. Trump said that John McCain would be “a very interesting candidate” for secretary of defense.

In the interview, Trump also predicted that, if he won the Reform Party’s nomination, he would “take more votes away from the Democrats” than the Republicans in the general election. He ended up withdrawing from the race in February 2000.

This won’t matter one bit to most Trump supporters as people are required to forget Trump’s liberal past.

I believe people can change.

Of course people can change. But what makes you think that Trump has?

I’m voting for Cruz.

As far as you’re concerned, I think its hilarious that after all the times you call people “Paid Russian Troll” you’re kissing the ass of the guy who actually says he likes Putin. LOL

Are you a retard Putinist on top of everything else? But as for Trump, he won't be bending over for Putin.

But as for Cruz, here is what I wrote to another Freeper the other day, to which he huffed and puffed but couldn't blow it down:

Cruz supports legalization of illegals and defines "amnesty" exclusively as a "pathway to citizenship." He backed away from deportation and was even shy to talk about self-deportation, making him even weaker than Romney on the topic. His amendment to the gang of eight bill would only have had that change (barring the pathway to citizenship), but with that change said he would vote for it. Of course, creating a second class of legal individuals in the US without a pathway to naturalization is ridiculous and cannot stand, and thus, if Cruz had his way, it would only result in a slower pathway to citizenship and 40 million new voters for the Democrat party-- on top of continued abuse of our financial system. You can find confirmation for this here:

http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2015/08/ted_cruz_vs_donald_trump_whos_stronger_on_immigration.html

This video, comparing and contrasting Cruz and his mealy mouth ways on this issue with Trump is also quite important. It's Cruz's artificiality on this issue and willingness to change terms and not tell the whole story which told me that I can't trust him:

http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/08/26/compare-and-contrast-senator-ted-cruz-vs-donald-trump-on-illegal-immigration-video/

Cruz has also not been honest about his wife's role with the CFR and Open Border Free-Trade schemes. He called her role "conservative," but the only thing conservative she wrote was calling for "free enterprise" to implement some of the globalist policy positions. In general, she supported open borders and the creation of a North American Union. Why would Cruz not be up front about her and describe her work as "conservative"? Either he is lying, or he really believes that a North American Union is a Conservative goal! Considering Cruz's double-talk on immigration... that's a big possibility.

Here is a video with some background on Heidi Cruz, showing her leftist bonafides:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6nYjbCOiLA

Sorry, but on the biggest issue of our time, IMMIGRATION, Cruz falls flat on his face.

I'll also add that Cruz revealed on Megyn Kelly that despite his rhetoric, he still agrees with his position in 2013 that the 14th amendment protects birthright citizenship. Constitutionalist? Not really. From the Supreme Court:

"The main object of the opening sentence of the 14th Amendment was ... to put it beyond doubt that all persons, white or black, and whether formerly slaves or not, born or naturalized in the United States, and owing no allegiance to any alien power, should be citizens of the United States ... The evident meaning of (the words, "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof") is, not merely subject in some respect or degree to the jurisdiction of the United States, but completely subject to their political jurisdiction, and owing them direct and immediate allegiance. ... Persons not thus subject to the jurisdiction of the United States at the time of birth cannot become so afterward, except by being naturalized ..." (Supreme Court opinion in Elk v. Wilkins (1884))

Conservatives who claim they hate Trump for what he MIGHT do, and claim they're Purists, really aren't, because at the end of the day, they're the ones who support the least pure candidates of all! Immigration is THE issue, above everything else.

"...September 6, 2012....I was addressing this Democratic crowd the same night the president was. My slot was after Caroline Kennedy and just before John Kerry and Joe Biden. The big addresses from Michelle and Barack Obama were coming right after that. You’d have to look long and hard in the annals of American politics to find a fish more out of water than I was that night.

I’d even joked with my wife, Carole, when I first got the call from Jim Messina, who was managing the president’s reelection campaign: “Didn’t anyone do a background check?”

I wasn’t even invited when Republican delegates gathered August 27 to 30 for their national convention in Tampa, just a short drive from my rented condo in St. Petersburg. Why would I be? I wasn’t one of theirs anymore. They were brimming with Tea Party fervor and anti‑Obama zeal. I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have enjoyed what I had to say.

“What an honor to be here with you to stand with President Barack Obama,” I told the Democratic crowd.

A small fan was whirring at my feet. I always like a fan at the podium when I give a big speech. You have no idea how hot those TV lights can be. But I could still feel tiny beads of sweat forming on my forehead. I don’t usually get nervous giving speeches. My heart was pumping now.

Before I got to the business at hand, I wanted to address the elephant in the room. Never before, I thought, had that old expression been quite so apt.

“Half a century ago,” I began, “Ronald Reagan, the man whose optimism inspired me to enter politics, famously said that he didn’t leave the Democratic Party, but the party left him. Well, listen, I can relate. I didn’t leave the Republican Party. It left me.”...........An excerpt from Charlie Crist’s The Party’s Over How the Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat

The GOP base is disenchanted with the party's conventional political figures as Presidential candidates this year because of the failure of such types to even attempt to carry out their promises in Congress or to treat the GOP base with respect. Now Trump comes along and echoes the concerns of the GOP base on illegal immigration and America's economic and strategic decline.

As the alternative to the GOP's conventional candidates for President, Trump seems pretty good, as do Carson and Fiorina, who are also outsiders and rising in the polls. When the whole bushel of apples has gone rotten, it makes sense to go to the tree to pick some fresh ones and overlook superficial scars and blemishes.

As for Trump praising Charley Rangel, it is easy enough to imagine him having had business reasons for doing so given that Rangel is a powerful local member of the US House. And changing party registration may well have had the same business motives in that Trump had to deal with deeply partisan Democrats in office and in the bureaucracy.

I think Trump was playing the field in 1999, sucking up to the Democratic “elite” to get building permits, union concessions, and other things in ‘rat infested cities, kind of like what all the other business people have to do. He has a ton of money now, but will never be the richest man in the world. So instead, he wants to be POTUS, arguably the most powerful man in the world. He has goals, other than party perpetuation, which is a big plus in my book. His ego is big enough that he wants to be listed with Washington, Lincoln, FDR, JFK, and Reagan. I think he does have an agenda to fix things, rather than just go along with the political class. Let him wheel and deal for the US. At least he’ll “want” to win.

Because you can't refute it. That's been the general reaction from every fellow foaming at the mouth about Donald Trump. But as long as it exists, you're Trump hate is pure dishonest hypocrisy.

Go vote for whoever you want. I honestly don't care. But do us a favor and keep your foaming at the mouth about Trump to yourself. Your own candidate has even bigger problems, which you evidently care nothing about.

That's all fine and dandy - my political leanings were far different 16 years ago than they are now - I have no reason to believe that Trump also had some earlier leanings smashed and that he has become more sensible in the intervening years.

Cruz is my first choice and Walker has been replaced by Trump as my second choice because he has the fire and drive to fight vs. making some statements which he then ends up backtracking and modifying as he goes. Walker would still be a good candidate but he hasn't displayed a flair for making waves and getting the notice that a candidate needs in order to be competitive. If he decides to take the bull by the horns, he could very well regain 2nd place on my slate, but so far he is shaping up to be a Romney in the fighting category and might very well wrest defeat from the jaws of victory. Politics is a dirty field and it takes someone willing to rassle in the mud to come out on top. If he decides he really wants the nomination, he will have to be willing to "stoop" to meet the competition - the Left will pull out all the stops and it will take more than the ability to weather such attacks in order to triumph.

That's my concern with Walker and why I like what Trump is doing - his in-your-face style indicates the drive necessary to win and his stated policies are acceptable.

GO CRUZ!!! Keep it up Trump!! Start to fight with gusto Walker!

When has Trump ever stood up against illegal immigration?
He had no problem letting them in his hotels, casinos Let him start by doing something like banning them from his properties for a couple of years then we may believe him.

Images are everything.
Renaming Trump’s fleet of jets AFI.
The new Trump White House ballroom.
A wall 25’ high, impenetrable and unclimbable running the entire southern border.
First lady Melania
Sarah heading Dept of Energy
Cruz on SCOTUS
Add your own.
Trump wins the image campaign hands down.

Latest PPP poll has Trump at 29 and Walker at 5 nationally. Now in Iowa Walker is doing better, he’s at 6% with Trump at 25. CW you need to post a lot more articles bashing Trump. Rumor has it help is on the way CW, your team (GOPe) is gearing up to launch a major slime attack on Trump. Keep up the good work CW, the GOPe needs all the help it can get.

You convinced me! Let's go ahead and vote for Jeb or Walker or Cruz who are going to grant amnesty under one form or another. That's definitely the most rational response. Let's give Trump a few more years to show us we can trust him to deport illegals, because maybe some contractor working for one out of 500 Trump companies may or may not have had illegal aliens or former illegal aliens on the payroll, meanwhile the Democratic Party will be getting 40 million new voters.

Dummy!

Cruz? That's almost funny

From another thread

What makes you think Cruz is anti-establishment? Cruz is pro amnesty. Pro Patriot Act. Pro New World Order agenda. And one could argue Pro Muslim Brotherhood since he favored cutting aid to Egypt after Egypt ousted its' MB government. Cruz has spend his entire adult life in Academia and Government. Hardly an anti-establishment resume and when coupled with the above makes me seriously doubt Cruzs' judgment. I think Cruz needs a few more years to demonstrate his bonifids before asking conservatives to vote him POTUSA.

Trump will enforce existing immigration laws. Only Trump will and for that reason alone Trump deserves the vote of every thinking American.

A Trump presidency would likely have many stylistic similarities with that of Teddy Roosevelt, with big ideas, many controversies, and a President who was determined to be at the center of action and to succeed.
