Why America Is Prone to Mass Shootings
Live Science ^ | August 26, 2015 | Stephanie Pappas

A strange paradox is emerging in America: Overall violent-crime rates are down, but active shooter events — in which a person is trying to kill multiple people in a populated area — appear to be on the rise, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics.

Meanwhile, a just-released study finds that although the United States has just about 5 percent of the world's population, the country has 31 percent of the world's mass shooters. The reasons for these numbers are complex, researchers say, but the data suggest that the availability of guns, and perhaps the American obsession with fame, may be to blame.

The United States has more private gun ownership and more desire for fame than any other country in the world, said Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama and author of the new research, presented Sunday (Aug. 23) at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

Yeah, so long as no one counts ISIS mass shootings and Syrian government mass shootings and Boko Haram mass shootings...

What about the high rate of anti-depressant use in the U.S.

I blame MSNBC. I bet this guy was a MSNBC viewer like Christopher Dorner, Elliot Rodgers, and Craig Hicks.

I always understood it was more than two. There were three victims today, but the councilwoman was not killed.

This from the web:

“Broadly speaking, the term refers to an incident involving multiple victims of gun violence, but there is no official set of criteria or definition for a mass shooting, according to criminology experts and FBI officials.”

No. If the media would quit publicizing these killers "manifestos," what they wrote on Facebook, etc., there would be no fame in shooting anyone.

Actually the root of the problem is the high rate of liberalism in the Republic, a situation that the Founders would not have tolerated. All mass murderers, high profile murders and every single political assassination has been at the hands of an atheist/leftist. There has never been such an occurrence as today's killings in Virginia committed by a Bible-based Conservative. Not one.

Guns don't kill people, liberalism kills millions!

Why America Is Prone to Mass Shootings

How about the dirtbag in Colorado given life imprisonment? How about those who are given the death sentence knowing they have another 20 years to live? How about the liberals glorifying their actions as time marches on?

Not all mass shootings are equal in my eyes.

Gang shootings usually have a single target with multiple wounded and killed.

What I think of as a mass shooting involves a lone nutjob who targets as many unarmed strangers as possible.

Why? Because we let the mentally ill roam our streets untreated.

Drugs / gang violence / mentally ill people rarely institutionalized / open borders / news media turns killers into cultural icons
