Republicans thought they had learned a lesson after 2012: Turning off Latino voters ensures defeat in the general election.
But as the disruptive presidential candidacy of Donald J. Trump continues to gain support, his hard line on immigration has driven rivals to match his biting anti-immigrant language and positions long considered extreme. It risks another general election cycle in which Hispanics view the party as unfriendly no matter who the nominee is, Republican strategists warned.
This week, several of Mr. Trumps Republican rivals, including Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, echoed his call to end automatic citizenship for the American-born children of undocumented immigrants, repealing a constitutional right dating from the Civil War era.

If he's wrong, I don't want to be right.
Some good threads on this “automatic birthright citizenship” topic on here today. Quite informative, one might browse them.
Except Trump is correct on the issue. ;-)
A majority of Hispanics are not going to vote for Republicans anyway. The ones streaming over the border now are even less likely to vote Republican. They’re poor and uneducated and hoping to find the gold at the end of the US welfare pot.
“Turning off Latino voters ensures defeat in the general election”.
Wrong. The key for a GOP win is getting conservatives off their ass and out to the polls to vote. McCain and Romney lost because millions of conservatives stayed home instead of voting for a them.
The legal immigrants will favor Trump. They followed the law. There’s a path to return to the country following the rules.
This is b.s. ‘sky is falling’ MSM garbage that the GOPe has believed for years now. It’s not true.
The huge influx of cheap, undocumented labor reduces employment and wages for EVERY American.
Why does the left not want Union workers and African-Americans to have job opportunities? They want to keep them broke, stupid, unemployed, and dependent.
Trump will get more Hispanic votes than Romney. Book it!
No, he isn't. Please educate yourself...
On Tuesdays Mark Levin Show: The argument that an illegal alien can step into the United States, claim legal and political jurisdiction, and confer citizenship to their child is insane. People claiming to be Constitutional experts saying that the 14th Amendment allows birthright citizenship are dead wrong. The 14th Amendment didnt even give citizenship to Native Americans, why would it give citizenship to illegal aliens? The Constitution is on our side in a second way: Article 1 Section 8, which grants plenary power to Congress to establish a uniform rule of naturalization. Were tired of being told someone can come into our country illegally, claim citizenship, and were told theres nothing we can do about it. We have policies that promote illegal aliens and illegal alien children more than the American citizen and American child were committing national suicide.
- Mark Levin
Under no circumstance does any other developed country have birth right citizenship for illegals. Only Canada has a form of it and changing this misbegotten rule is paramount to eliminating a major draw for illegals entering the country from both south of the border as well as birth vacations from China and Asia.
We are under assault from all sides by illegal and legal immigrants and presently one in seven people residing in this country are foreign born.
We must eliminate Illegal Immigration and greatly curtail legal immigration in order to assimilate those foreign born members of society already here.
I suggest a minimum of ten years moratorium on immigration from third world countries. Twenty would be better.
his biting anti-immigrant language and positions long considered extreme.

By whom? Brain dead liberals.
Also, drawing away the Reagan Democrats who are turned off by their party’s extreme leftward turn.
The correct term is "illegal aliens". And he is 100% correct.
And you were there when they passed the 14th Amendment saying that children of people illegally in the United States are citizens?
This was NOT the intent of the drafters of the amendment.
Why would you insist on a position completely opposed to the original intent of the 14th amendment?
Your liberal interpretation of the amendment is the same type of thinking that gives the government the ability to take away your guns or your right to be politically incorrect.
Not in my world he isn't!
And it's 'illegal aliens' not 'undocumented immigrants' unless you're part of the open borders crowd.
No, he isn’t. You’re wrong.
L
“Undocumented immigrants”?? Wow, how GOPe of you.
Bull$hit. They are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, and the 14 th Amendment was not written to protect them or their offspring.
it's not "immigrant" - - - it's illegal slime bags
Fixed it.
No...he is actually showing the GOP, and more importantly...the American people...the way out of the corner the Libtards, Progressives, and RINOs have painted us all into.
Turning people away who want to enter your country illegally is not considered extreme.
