As a committee of city government called Thursday for taking down four controversial statues that celebrate Confederate officials and a white supremacist group’s violent fight against a biracial state government during Reconstruction, Gov. Bobby Jindal’s office said it is looking into whether he can use the power of his office to keep the monuments in place.

The monuments, including the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee atop the column at a St. Charles Avenue traffic circle, should be taken down under an ordinance that allows the City Council to remove public statues that celebrate racist ideologies or are likely to be sites of violent protest, the Historic District Landmarks Commission decided after about an hour of sometimes heated testimony.

This reminds me of Bolsheviks and ISIS - destroy history. During and after the Russian Civil War, even the possession of a White Army battle flag called would lead to execution. That is why so far of these flags have survived. Here in the U.S., attacks have already started on Thomas Jefferson and other patriots.

Most residents of New Orleans have no Idea what's going on or who's who. That's because almost 50% of them cannot read or write.

Lots of antebellum homes and many of the beautifully restored shotgun shacks date from the slave era. Many of the French Quarter shops at street level have apartments in the back which were once slave quarters. Of course, a lot of slave owners were themselves freed slaves.
The restaurant and piano bar of the luxury Omni Hotel, corner of Chartres and St. Louis Streets, are now on the site of the old slave market and auction block.

...50% cannot read or write.

Nobody really requires them to.
Most of the black population of New Orleans are descendants of slaves who chose not to leave after they were freed. They preferred to remain with the slower paced agriculturally based economy, because it was what they knew. A surprising number stayed on or near the plantations, working as sharecroppers alongside their former owners.
There’s a weird love-hate relationship between the blacks and whites in New Orleans to this day, a servile, almost too-agreeable yassa massa shtick to white people’s faces, with an undertone of menace behind your back because they’d just as soon slit your throat.

George Washington Elementary School on St. Claude Avenue, named for the nation’s first president and a slave owner, was changed Charles Richard Drew Elementary School after a black surgeon who fought to desegregate blood transfusions.

Or a surgeon.

And the Democratic Party is going after Thomas Jefferson - renaming its annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner.
