Another email arrived the other day from a citizen who blames Democrats for everything bad about Baltimore for the poverty and the potholes, the homicides and homelessness, the high property taxes and the trash in the Inner Harbor. These assertions have been arriving in a moderate flow since the April riot, framed between harsh criticism of Baltimore's Democratic mayor and soaring praise for Maryland's Republican governor who "saved the city."
The most recent email came from an "interested friend" few writers of these letters sign their names who declared: "Democrats have had Baltimore in its grip for 50 years and it's an incorrigible mess."
Of course, blaming Democratic politicians for the complex, multi-generational problems of Baltimore is easy because it's your only choice. The city has not had a mayor from the Grand Old Party since Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin in 1967, and as of this writing, no Republican has entered the field of candidates for the 2016 municipal election.
So, for all of my "interested friends" who have written since the April riot to state the obvious that Democrats have been in charge of Baltimore for a long time, thus to blame for all its failings allow me to provide some perspective. Otherwise, you can stop here and return to designing memes ridiculing the mayor.

But he reveals one weakness: Dems simply assume that inner-city rule is a given and don't bother to invest any interest in that. They are far too concerned with capturing suburban votes. I actually wonder how a Herman Cain or a Ben Carson would do if either would run for B-more mayor? NB: I don't think that any white conservative could have a hope in **** of winning (if he/she said what needed to be said, he'd be run out of town on a rail for being a racist)...but attempts to tar a Cain or a Carson with that brush wouldn't really work too well.
(I know, I'm fantasizing...but one could say the same thing about Giuliani in NYC in 1993)
Is there a single Republican left in Baltimore? Further, who would want the job, inheriting the mess that fifty years of Dem-only rule have left? Even Tommy Carcetti was a Dem....
Tell me, Mr Reporter, who should get the blame other than Dem city admin one after another?
Like the lying “african american” mayor who took power into her own hands sided with the rioters became judge and jury convicted her own police person as a killer without evidence or trial, a person of color will prevail in these high positions because the misbehaving populace feel more comfortable witha brother or sister and the guilty white folk understand the humanity. failure once again!
Unions have a huge presence around here and they basically own local government. We also have those racist groups like the NAACP which corner the market on black voters. They tell the black community who to vote for and it does so. No way would they recommend a Republican.
To boil it down the writer is saying...
White’s fault for moving and the Republicans fault for shipping jobs overseas.
Heck, might as well throw in Bush’s Fault as well.
Republicans have largely abandoned the cities. I personally think its a bad thing because we need at least some cities to lean pink if not red.
They’re starting to creep back in in some cities. The GOP has actually been opening some offices in Detroit in recent years.
Cities can be, should be, and sometimes still are great places to live, as well as work. The middle class tends to flee because of crime, taxes, and lousy schools. High taxes and lousy schools are within the control of government, but big cities are fiscally under the control of the unions, while liberal pols systematically resist serious educational reform for an assortment of familiar and bad reasons. Crime is harder because of its links to family breakdown and substance abuse, but it also in large part the long term unintended consequence of Great Society liberalism, which produced a massive expansion of long term dependency.
So is it fair to blame the democrats for the plight of the cities? Yes.
In addition to the points others have raised - what Republican (or for that matter, self-respecting person) would want their names attached to the vast fields of fail that is Baltimore?
That’s the problem with most cities for the past 50 years+, they do lean RED. Commie Red.
I think with a Trump presidency you would at least see a marginal reawakening of a faint shade of conservatism in some cities. I don’t think it would last long, though.
I’d love to see republicans regain control of some cities. The worse shape those cities are in the better so we can show what right leaning policies can really do.
At the state level the GOP has done some great things for Detroit often against their will. The governor imposed emergency manager appointed police chief is a solid pro 2nd amendment and self defense guy. The city has since voted to keep him. Forcing them to accept a new bridge over the Detroit river is good for them both in construction jobs now and shipping and logistics jobs later. Detroit is now a leader in school choice and charter schools.
The way I see it, if we aren’t taking new ground, we’re losing.
Since the 1898 NYC Constitution, 7 of 18 NYC Mayors have run as Republicans for at least one term. (Though few if any would be considered "conservative" by any benchmark used anywhere outside of New York City.) As Moonbat liberal as New Yorkers generally are, they occasionally see that ultra-liberalism doesn't work and will hire a less liberal Mayor to make the city work again, temporarily. Then they'll revert to form and hire another moonbat lib like DeBlasio to make it return to dysfunction. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Unfortunately, Baltimore doesn't have it's own Manhattan island. What it has is a port that's a little too far up Chesapeake Bay.
The fact that generations of Baltimore Democrats have created a dysfunctional and corrupt city doesn't mean that there is any feasible solution. Other than abandonment and hopes that maybe in 1000 years something useful might be built on it's site.
For LIBERALS, it’s always someone else’s fault. Regardless of how many people ran for office, It’s been the DemonRATS that have ruled in B-More forever. It’s their liberal policies that have turned it into a sewer.
That was my first thought, what sane Republican would want the job at this point? Let the ‘rats finish the job they started, with the support of all their free sh*t army voters. Any Republican running would have to be a quasi-rat anyway and try to outpander the rats, so let the rats do what they do best and finish their destruction. The worse that can happen is that they’ll force non-Baltimoreans to pony up more tax money to pay for their sprint to the finish line, and that will happen regardless.
Right, every white business owner should open a business there and start the over/under on how soon it gets looted and torched, or bites the dust due to the free sh*t army helping themselves (funny how that’s the only time they help themselves, to other people’s stuff). Every white person should move back and pay extortionate taxes while they run the gauntlet of the polar bear hunting packs everytime they leave home, or wait at home to have their doors kicked in by the more violent recruits of the free sh*t army, while the state denies them their constitutional right to self-defense.
Yes, socialist policies endorsed forever by the majority of Baltimore voters
From Wikipedia
Baltimore Maryland
“According to the 2010 Census, 63.7% of the population was Black, 29.6% White”
Will someone, anyone please name for me one successful Black majority, Black led city in this country.
There may be one, but I really cannot think of it.
East Hartford, CT, last had a Republican mayor in the 1990s, but it was when the Dems were split. Hartford, CT last had a Republican mayor in the 1970s.
How so?
New York is not a majority black city, never has been, and isn't close to being one now.
