Lefty media (both overt and covert), which has been back on its heels lately thanks to Hillarys impending arrest and prosecution, is already buzzing about the line quoted above, uttered today by Bush in Iowa. Skip to 9:40 of the clip below for the question and his answer in full. On the one hand, Im reluctant to clobber a guy for a poorly worded soundbite when, as here, its in service to a sound point, that Obama and Hillary wasted the security improvements in Iraq circa 2009 by bringing everyone home and then standing around while Maliki fostered sectarian war. On the other hand, Democrats are going to clobber him with it so why shouldnt we have at it now, when its still politically safe on the right to say this is a tin-eared, frankly odd way to describe the state of Iraq for most of Dubyas presidency? (Once hes the nominee and partisan battle lines are fixed, itll be partisan treason to acknowledge that this was a stupid thing to say.) Naval War College prof Tom Nichols:

I think even if Obama had come in under such circumstances---which he might not if Bush had done the above---even he would have lacked the support to pull out. But, as I say, we'll end up paying for that real estate all over again.
That’s the Bushes in a nutshell: half-measures. Didn’t take out Saddam the first time in 1991, then didn’t commit to ensuring Iraq would be stable after taking him out.
And like Wilson’s actions, led to further war and strife.
The guy can’t make up his mind.
Because Kuwait has been nothing but appreciative since ?
As for Syria, Assad is the only strongman in that area protecting Christians.
And we are in an undeclared war against him.
We may yet go back, but I don’t think it’s a priority. And before we do, we need to establish a doctrine that is very simple in it’s understanding and application:
If we invade, we keep the real estate for eventual annexation. We keep the wealth, we keep the territory. And if the people behave and adapt our standards, we keep them too.
The most successful part of our history were the years where we were growing as a country. Manifest Destiny 2.0.
We don’t need a wall on our southern border, our goal should be to establish a buffer state.
I believe the Kuwaiti military senior chiefs were on the beach at a plush French resort when Iraq invaded. They were smart enough to hire an expensive US PR firm to have a Kuwaiti expat testify about the Iraqi troops turning off the ventilators for premature babies at the hospital in Kuwait City - turned out to be a total lie to stir up support for a US led invasion. Just yesterday, Trump told of being visited by the major Kuwaiti fund manager after the 1991 war; he had disdain for the US and stated that the fund wouldn’t invest a dime here. I could give a damn about Kuwait.
No, I am not.
We defeated the insurgency and Al Queda Iraq with the surge.
When Bush left office, that had occurred. In addition, safe elections had been held. Any terror/bombing attack were down dramatically.
The Iraqi people had elected their own government, had their own constitution, and things were dramatically better.
When Obama chose to not keep the stabilization force in place...which was required to ensure that those things continued...that’s when it went to hell in a hand basket.
Trying to say those things did not occur is what is the revision of history...plain and simple.
We had a solid base on BOTH sides of Iran---which will be sorely needed because eventually, mark my words, we will have to foment a revolution there and/or invade.
We had the war won. It was a done deal when ZEro came in. But Jeb is far too "kind" to show the folly of Zero's policy
Amen, my friend.
These are the facts. Some folks simply either want to ignore them, pretend they didn't happen, or simply say things differently in the hopes it can stick.
But none of that changes what actually occurred.
