More than 200 nuclear and biochemical experts from the Chinese military have been sent to the port city of Tianjin after two huge explosions killed at least 50 people.
A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency's Beijing environmental emergency response centre has also gone to the area.

The smallest is about 10-12 kilotons. This was 24 tons.
Big difference.
Lots of video. Makes for good TV.
💀, that stuff will kill ya dead pretty quick.
Some more info regarding hazards facing clean up efforts from this article at the International Business Times.
Live: Sodium Cyanide from Tianjin Warehouse Has Leaked into Underground Drain Water
The reported use of water by the firemen would have gone far to increase the vapor, not to mention any adverse reactions to the chemicals ...
Except the size and composition of the fireballs would have incinerated many in the complax. There would be no remains. The dead could easily number in the high hundreds. This is a case were the wosrst is the reality. Anything less and the huge secracy would not exist.
Great points.
Do you think it could have been a “dirty” bomb?
No, not a bomb per se, but as has been speculated there could have been various nuclear materials used in industry or medical that the explosive effect would have been to distribute them like an actual bomb would have done.
Thanks.
Would pelvises remain?
Saw a photo of africans who tapped into a pipeline. They were incinerated. All that was left was about 100 pelvises scattered about.
From http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/
Effects radii for 3 kiloton surface burst (smallest to largest):
Fireball radius: 120 m (0.05 km²)
Air blast radius (20 psi): 310 m (0.31 km²)
At 20 psi overpressure, heavily built concrete buildings are severely damaged or demolished; fatalities approach 100%. Air blast radius (5 psi): 0.66 km (1.37 km²)
At 5 psi overpressure, most residential buildings collapse, injuries are universal, fatalities are widespread.
I don’t think you get the EMP effects with a surface detonation.
Don’t know, but if the temp was high enough there would be nothing. And there was also explosive force, enough to shatter the pelvises into tiny bits.
I heard on the news that they had LNG and Sodium Cyanide at this site....
LNG would certainly make a VERY impressive BLEVE... Always been one of my worst nightmares.
Once upon a time, I made NaCN for a living. Adding firewater to that would generated a bunch of Hydrogen Cyanide.... not cool.
Sodium Cyanide would not “cause a blast”... but, it sure as hell will complicate the cleanup. It generates Hydrogen Cyanide gas, which is fatal when inhaled even at very low levels.
Potassium Nitrate, on the other hand... would make one hell of a blast. This is the material that caused the Texas City ship explosion in 1947. That explosion broke windows in houses 20 miles away.
NaCN and TDI... yikes! I wouldn’t want to be on the Chinese cleanup crew.
I just knew it.
Chuck Norris uses Hydrogen Cyanide as an air-freshener.
Do the Chinese have a Chuck Norris equivalent??
They need one.
