How I Helped Todd Akin Win — So I Could Beat Him Later
Politico ^ | August 11, 2015 | Sen. Claire McCaskill

Posted on 08/12/2015 6:04:24 AM PDT by C19fan

It was August 7, 2012, and I was standing in my hotel room in Kansas City about to shotgun a beer for the first time in my life. I had just made the biggest gamble of my political career—a $1.7 million gamble—and it had paid off. Running for reelection to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from Missouri, I had successfully manipulated the Republican primary so that in the general election I would face the candidate I was most likely to beat. And this is how I had promised my daughters we would celebrate. But first let me go back to the beginning.

Shame on the GOP MO voters for falling for this obvious trap.

Akin shot himself in the foot, then shot himself in the other foot.

Actually, she picked the candidate most disliked by the media’s most profitable demographics. Ensuring the media would be the most hostile to him.

It’s a very good article (her bias doesn’t even need comment). This is how campaigns are conducted.

Yep. We prove time and again, we are the stupid party. Why wasn't there a Republican strategist who would counteract this manipulation? A strategist, dissecting the ad, should have seen through it. WAKE UP, REPUBLICANS, BEFORE YOUR COUNTRY IS COMPLETELY DESTROYED!!

Akin was/is a fool.

Claire is a real class act and obviously has a real classy family.
I will not soon forgive Akin for getting her elected.

I was one of the Akin defenders. I was wrong.

And Claire herself is too stupid to realize how her party used her and she will never make the big leagues as they promised. She will be a footnote to Akins story.

Her and Jeremiah Jay Nixion are two peas in a pod.

my respect for you just doubled...(and I already had a good amount) - only the second time I’ve ever seen a Freeper acknowledge such.

There’s gonna be a ton who are in that position here in the next weeks or months...I doubt any of them will fess up....

Akin hit bottom, then kept on digging.

Utter nonsense. Trump has large support from liberal and moderate voters.

After he’s kept Hillary’s , Rubio’s and Jeb’s support down for a few more months I wouldn’t mind him ‘shooting himself in the foot’, but he’s doing an excellent job of handling the media too.

It was not GOP voters, Dems crossed over to vote in the primary. She would have lost to Sara Steelman.

I’m sure we can come up with plenty of colorful descriptions for Akin.

Akin didn’t put his foot in his mouth, he ate a shoe store.

The point is that we can’t have any more Akins or Mourdocks carrying the banner of conservatism.

It wasn’t that Todd Akin was such a bad guy so much as the fact that he had chronic foot in mouth disease.

You need a little logic lesson madame....yes, Trump has some voter support who were NOT Akin supporters...but he also has the Akin supporters. The two are not mutually exclusive, and yet, that’s the fatuous logic on which you based your snarky response.

It’s fine to be snarky, but not if your dead wrong. Then it’s embarrassing.

I just read the article..what she really wanted to say was, "We knew he was an idiot. It was just a matter of time he would stupidly appear on a liberal show with nothing to gain and everything to lose and put his foot in his mouth. The fact he did it so easily made us feel so good. Thank you Missouri GOP for being so damn gullible."

If I may also add, my home state of Louisiana FINALLY dumped Landrieu last fall and the GOP nominee, then congressman Cassidy, was kept out of the limelight for most of the runoff..even went to DC to vote during the last week of campaigning..even though Cassidy is smarter than Akin (who isn't?), no one wanted to him to take the chance of blowing the election with a stupid gaffe.

Here was my take on Akin: he was NOT tea party guy...he’d been in the House for six years, or six terms, not sure which - meaning he was damned near part of the establishment. He was self serving, paying his entire family out of campaign funds, and he was too arrogant and ignorant to know exactly what Claire dear is admitting to...she created Akin so she could beat him, because she knew that Bruner or Steelman would rock her clock in the general.

Akin only glommed onto the tea party thing AFTER the primary when both many in the TP and the GOP - e said NO to him. It was a rare case when the estabs were correct....only they didn’t want to claim him as one of their own, which he was.

oops, saw an “s” in there that wasn’t there...the madame thing was a mistake, not a snark. Just clearing that up...I stand by the rest 100%.
